Allan W. Bloom, MD, associate professor at Nova Southeastern University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in health care.

With nearly four decades of experience, Dr. Bloom has established a successful career in education and health care, specializing in general internal medicine and geriatric medicine. He currently excels as an associate professor at Nova Southeastern University, a position he has held since 2017. Nova Southeastern University is a private research institution in Florida known for its diverse academic programs, innovative research, and commitment to community engagement and student success across various fields of study. Previously, he practiced as an internist with the Holy Cross Medical Group, a network of healthcare providers affiliated with Holy Cross Health in South Florida, offering a wide range of medical services and specialized care with a focus on patient-centered healthcare, from 2007 to 2016.

Dr. Bloom laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science from Drake University in 1970 and a Doctor of Medicine from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in 1974. He is also actively involved in volunteering and charity work through the university. In spring 2024, he participated in an indigent health fair in downtown Fort Lauderdale alongside 15 students, and they organize two health fairs annually at different facilities, often in collaboration with the Brown County Health Department.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Bloom’s decision to pursue medicine stemmed from a natural inclination towards science, making it an obvious choice. His transition to an associate professor role at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine was the result of various shifts within hospital groups, ultimately offering an ideal opportunity for him and his colleagues to contribute to medical education. He takes pride in his expertise, focusing on quality over quantity in patient care by limiting the number of consultations per session and conducting multiple sessions each week to ensure thorough and attentive care for each individual. He also notes that he has witnessed significant transformations in the health care industry, especially within hospitals. The shift towards computerization, including electronic medical records, has brought both improvements and challenges. While these systems offer benefits, he believes they can also complicate medical documentation, sometimes resulting in less clear and more cumbersome patient notes.

In the coming years, Dr. Bloom aims to focus on teaching and connecting with the next generation of health care professionals, emphasizing the importance of effectively interacting with patients to foster comfort and engagement. By encouraging open communication, he hopes to help individuals express their needs and concerns more freely. He aspires to concentrate solely on education, without the administrative responsibilities of leadership, allowing him to make a meaningful impact by imparting knowledge and skills to future healthcare providers. When advising future professionals in the field, he emphasizes the importance of prioritizing inclusivity and collaboration with patients. He encourages involving patients in decision-making processes to create a partnership where they feel understood and actively participate in their health care journey. He says that this approach enhances patient satisfaction and ensures that medical decisions are made collaboratively, reflecting mutual respect and shared responsibility.
