Thomas Haugo, Military Outreach Director at Minnesota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in support for military veterans.

Mr. Haugo served his country in the United States Army and United States Army Reserve for three decades, where he attained the rank of colonel and served as chief of staff with the 88th United States Army Reserve Regional Readiness Command in Minnesota, overseeing 20,000 soldiers with a budget of about $250 million. His many honors during his military service include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service with two oak leaf clusters; Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Army Achievement Medal. Before entering the military, Mr. Haugo obtained a Bachelor of Arts in education from The University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa in 1970.

As Military Outreach Director with the Minnesota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve since 2017, Mr. Haugo’s responsibilities include tracking and overseeing more than 150 units for the State of Minnesota which include the seven reserve services: U.S. Air Force, Air National Guard Reserve, Coast Guard  Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy Reserve, Army Reserve and Army National Guard and discussing with the soldiers on an annual basis their rights under USERRA (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act).  Among his many military support activities, Mr. Haugo has served as a volunteer member of the National Museum of the United States Army; the Blue Devil Association of the 88th U.S. Army Infantry Division; the Association of the United States Army (AUSA); Army Reserve Ambassador for the State of Minnesota; and the Armed Forces Service Center. Besides his military and military support service, Mr. Haugo excelled in the landscape business for four decades, in which he served as project manager for Bachman’s Landscaping from 1965 to 2016 and received 11 landscape design awards from the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association.

Mr. Haugo attributes his success to hard work, to his ability to listen carefully, to communicate well and to his ability to solve problems. He also cites following guidance and orders to make informed recommendations. Mr. Haugo became involved with the Minnesota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve because of his previous tenure as Army Reserve Ambassador for the State of Minnesota. When the organization needed someone to assume the responsibilities of the position, he volunteered for the role as military outreach director. As a career highlight, Mr. Haugo takes special pride in his tenure of chief of staff of the 88th United States Army Reserve Regional Readiness Command.
