Michael G. Bissell, MD, PhD, MPH, Professor Emeritus at the Ohio University College of Medicine, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in pathology.

Growing up with hopes of pursuing medicine, Dr. Bissell earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Arizona in 1969. By 1975, he had acquired an MD from Stanford University, going on to earn a PhD in neurobiology two years later. In 1978, Dr. Bissell earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California Berkeley.

A licensed physician and surgeon in numerous states, Dr. Bissell began his career as an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Chicago Medical Center in 1984. From 1988 until 1991, he proceeded to gain experience by serving as the director of clinical pathology at the City of New Hope Medical Center. In the years that followed, Dr. Bissell became the vice president and medical director at the Nichols Institute before taking on the role of director of clinical pathology at Allegheny General Hospital in 1998. Two years later, Dr. Bissell became the director, vice-chair, and associate dean of applied research in pathology at Ohio State University. In this role, he excelled until 2014, retiring as a professor emeritus that year.

Outside of his primary endeavors, Dr. Bissell shared his field expertise by speaking at over 60 national and international presentations between 1985 and 2013. Moreover, he served as an author to 138 papers and 16 book chapters. Some of Dr. Bissell’s most notable works include “Toxicology Testing, An Issue of Clinics in Laboratory Medicine,” and “Laboratory-Related Measures of Patient Outcomes: An Introduction.” Reflecting on his myriad accomplishments, Dr. Bissell considers one of his greatest achievements to be his work in designing the clinical laboratories at Allegheny General Hospital. He has additionally consulted on the design of two hospital labs in the United Kingdom, which was an exceptional experience. As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Bissell is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the West.
