Company:
Perimeter College at George State University

Westfield, Indiana, United States

Howard T. Silverstein, PhD, DC, retired laboratory supervisor at Perimeter College, part of Georgia State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry education and chiropractic education.

Initially focused entirely on chemistry, Dr. Silverstein took a unique path to the chiropractic field. He was hired by the Palmer College of Chiropractic as a professor of chemistry. Since he was totally new to the world of chiropractic, Dr. Silverstein was encouraged by a supervisor to take a few courses in the subject. Those classes gave him a better understanding of the mission of the school, which is the source of one-third of all practicing chiropractic doctorate holders.

Quickly enamored with the topic, Dr. Silverstein ended up completing the entire chiropractic program. Across nearly 30 years at Palmer College of Chiropractic, he took on increasing levels of responsibility. On top of his professorial duties, Dr. Silverstein also contributed as a registrar, faculty marshal, chairman of the physiology and chemistry department, and director of research. He also assisted with the school’s transition from one academic calendar to another, providing significant improvements to the educational process.

Following his time at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dr. Silverstein served as a laboratory supervisor for 10 years at Perimeter College, part of Georgia State University. During this time, he monitored all of the institution’s chemistry laboratories, ensuring everything was prepared and classes could run smoothly. Dr. Silverstein also wrote or edited all of the laboratory manuals at Perimeter College. He considers this achievement to be one of the most notable highlights of his career, especially as those manuals continued to be used for many years after he left the school. Dr. Silverstein also aided in evaluating other colleges with chiropractic programs with an accrediting agency for 10 years, demonstrating his mastery of this field that had once been brand-new to him. He retired in 2009 and has focused on taking care of his wife, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Silverstein’s performance as an educator was born of his own academic journey, beginning with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Alfred University in 1965. He obtained a Master of Science from the University of Illinois in 1967. Subsequently, Dr. Silverstein earned a PhD in chemistry from the same institution in 1969. Following that, he pursued a doctorate in chiropractic from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1976.

To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Silverstein has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. He formerly held the role of chairman for the Iowa and Illinois local section of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Silverstein has maintained membership in the American Chemical Society for more than 50 years.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Silverstein is a loving husband, father to two and grandfather to four. Beyond his professional obligations, he has found fulfilment in volunteer work, including with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and Perimeter College’s annual Science Olympiad. Looking ahead, Dr. Silverstein is focused on continuing to support his wife, whom he credits for his own success. Despite being officially retired, he also looks forward to finding ways to contribute to various organizations, including becoming more active with the local branch of the American Chemical Society.
