Kathleen “Katie” H. Barnes, PhD, President of K. H. Barne Advisory Services, Retired Educator and Administrator at Endicott College and Neumann University, and Retired Physical Therapist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education, Administration and Physical Therapy.
Dr. Barnes’s illustrious career in health care and education spans decades, marked by her unwavering commitment to helping others. In 2020, she began serving as the president of K. H. Barnes Advisory Services. Based in Massachusetts, she continues to provide her leadership and expertise to clients after more than 40 years of industry experience.
Having begun her professional journey as a physical therapist at Bellevue Health Care Center in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1976. She quickly became a pioneer in pediatric physical therapy, working with Meeting Street Schools in East Providence, Rhode Island, from 1977 to 1982 and later with the Northshore Education Consortium in Peabody, Massachusetts, until 1987. During this time, Dr. Barnes was instrumental in developing rehabilitative engineering and universal design, collaborating with wheelchair vendors to enhance assistive technology.
Dr. Barnes spent nearly 30 years as a private practice physical therapist in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts between 1979 and 2006, where she focused her efforts on pediatric physical clinical services and consultation regarding assistive technology. She was also an advocate who lobbied for disability rights legislation at the state and national levels.
In 1993, Dr. Barnes also began working in academia at her alma mater, Endicott College, in Beverly, Massachusetts, as the coordinator of clinical education for the physical therapist assistant program. Her expertise and dedication led her to become the director of the program in 1998. Dr. Barnes played a pivotal role in transitioning the institution from offering two-year to four-year degrees. Her leadership skills were further recognized when she became the assistant dean of the school of arts and sciences in 2002 and later the acting dean in 2005.
Dr. Barnes’s ascent continued as she took on roles such as dean of the division of academic success and senior vice president at Endicott College from 2006 to 2018. Her tenure was marked by her innovative approach to student retention and support services. In 2018, Dr. Barnes accepted the opportunity to serve as the interim president of Endicott College before becoming interim provost at both Endicott College and Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Barnes’s academic achievements include an Associate of Arts in liberal studies from Endicott College, a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, a Master of Science in physical therapy from the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a Doctor of Philosophy in arts and sciences from Union Institute & University in Cincinnati, Ohio. These credentials have been instrumental in shaping her career trajectory.
Active as a member of several industry-related organizations, Dr. Barnes is currently affiliated with the registry for college and university presidents and the American Physical Therapy Association. Beyond her professional endeavors, she is involved with civic organizations as a member of the board of trustees for IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport. She has also volunteered with the Cummings Foundation in New England.
Dr. Barnes’s contributions have been recognized with several accolades, such as the Women of Impact Award from Endicott College and the Outstanding Service Award from the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. She attributes her success to her family’s unwavering support, particularly that of her husband, who always believed she would achieve greatness.
With an eye toward the future, Dr. Barnes aims to continue making a positive impact through education while spending quality time with family and friends. Her journey thus far is a testament to her grit, perseverance and resilience, qualities that have propelled her to the forefront of health care, higher education and leadership.
