Meenakshi Bhattacharjee, PhD, Executive Director for the Center for Applied Algal Research, Research Professor and Department of Biosciences, Faculty Fellow and Consultant at Rice University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Science Research and Education.

Dr. Bhattacharjee has established a distinguished career in algal biotechnology, environmental science and plant biology, marked by more than three decades of research, teaching and leadership. Since 2014, she has served as an executive director and research professor at the Center for Applied Algal Research at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where she also holds the roles of faculty fellow and consultant. In these capacities, Dr. Bhattacharjee leads pioneering research in algal biotechnology, focusing on wastewater treatment, fish feed development and sustainable agricultural practices. Her expertise encompasses cyanobacteria, biofertilizers, biomass cultivation, bioremediation and extremophiles, among other areas of the field, where she is widely recognized for her innovative contributions.

Before her tenure at Rice University, Dr. Bhattacharjee spent 25 years at Barkatullah University in India. She excelled as a professor and department head from 2005 to 2014. She previously held the position of professor and head of the department of biosciences on campus between 1989 and 2014, where she played a pivotal role in advancing academic programs and mentoring emerging scientists. Earlier in her career, Dr. Bhattacharjee served as a reader in the department of bioscience from 1997 to 2005, following her role as a lecturer between 1989 and 1997. Her early academic journey also included a decade as a visiting faculty in the departments of microbiology, biotechnology, limnology and pharmacy at Barkatullah University.

Dr. Bhattacharjee was named a freelance independent consultant and advisor in 2021, guiding projects related to environmental biotechnology. Earlier, she was appointed as an overseas associate with the department of biotechnology at the University of Oregon in 2007. Her global perspective was enriched as a commonwealth fellow in biotechnology and visiting faculty at Durham University in the U.K. and the British Antarctic Survey at the University of Cambridge, also in the U.K., between 1998 and 1999. She also contributed as an academic advisor and mentor throughout her career.

Highly educated, Dr. Bhattacharjee’s early education included a diploma from Loreto Convent Asansol in India. She later acquired a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in plant sciences from Banaras Hindu University in India. Additionally, Dr. Bhattacharjee completed coursework in algal biotechnology at the University of California, San Diego, and obtained a course certificate in entrepreneurship in emerging economics from Harvard Business School in 2021.

Dr. Bhattacharjee is an active member of several prestigious scientific organizations worldwide. She is a life member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Indian Science Congress, the International Society of Applied Biology, the Indian Botanical Society and the J.K. Foundation India. She is also a life member and vice president of the Society for the Promotion of Plant Science Research. Dr. Bhattacharjee holds fellowships with the Academy of Environmental Biology, the National Environmental Science Academy, the International Consortium of Contemporary Biologists and the Horticultural Society of India. Her affiliations extend to the American Society of Plant Biology, the New York Academy of Sciences and the Organization for Women in Science in the Developing World, among others.

Dr. Bhattacharjee’s prolific scholarly output includes co-authoring and authoring over 245 articles in journals such as the Journal of Algal Biomass Utilization, the Journal of Algal Biomass Utilization and the Indian Academy of Sciences on a range of topics. She has also served as an ad hoc reviewer for over 60 journals and has contributed to two books and 11 book chapters. Beyond her writing contributions, Dr. Bhattacharjee has served as a platinum jubilee speaker for the National Academy of Sciences of India, has presented research internationally and has participated in numerous featured interviews.

Aside from her work-related engagements, Dr. Bhattacharjee’s civic engagement includes membership with the Prof H.S. Srivastava Foundation for Science and Society and Barkatullah University’s academic council. She also participates with the Hindu American Foundation and serves as an organizer for Hindu Science Day.

Dr. Bhattacharjee’s professional achievements have been recognized with over a dozen accolades. Among these, she received an Albert Schweitzer International Gold Medal for Science from the International Albert Schweitzer Foundation in 2006, an International Plant Scientist Award from the Horticultural Society of India in 2010, an International Scientist Award from the International Nuclear Science Olympiad Awards in 2021, nomination for the Top 50 Women Leaders of Houston for Outstanding Achievements in Environmental Biotechnology in 2023, and, among many others, the Nobel Academician Award Scientific Laurels in 2026.

Throughout her career, Dr. Bhattacharjee has remained committed to advancing scientific knowledge, promoting sustainability, mentoring future leaders and addressing critical environmental challenges through innovative research on algae bioremediation, biofertilizers, fish feed development and renewable energy solutions. She believes that her legacy will be defined by both her extensive publications and by empowering students who will continue building upon her foundational work.
