Richard Altabe, principal, executive vice president for institutional advancement at Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.
With over three and a half decades of experience, Mr. Altabe has established a successful career in adult education. He currently serves as principal and executive vice president for institutional advancement at the Hebrew Academy of Long Beach, roles he has held since 2016, and as an adjunct professor at Touro College since 2021. His prior experience includes headmaster of the boys high school at Shaare Torah from 2011 to 2016, director of Limudei Chol Institute at the National Society of Hebrew Day Schools from 2015 and 2016, and executive director of TOVA Mentoring from 2010 to 2015. He also served as an educational consultant for Congregation Yeshiva of Greater Monsey Inc., project coordinator for the Sandy Tutoring Program at The Marion & Aaron Gural JCC, and mentor for the ELAI Leadership Training Program at The Lookstein Center. He was also principal at Magen David Yeshivah, dean of secular studies at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, and founding director of Simcha Day Camp from 1991 to 2000.
Mr. Altabe authored “Secular Studies: A Crisis Within Our Schools” in Hamechanech, “General Studies in Yeshivos: A Neglected Frontier” in Jewish Observer, and co-authored “Children in Crisis: A Report From Conference” for Nefesh International. He dedicates his time to the National Society for Hebrew Day Schools, the Consortium of Jewish Day Schools, and the Blue Ribbon Commission for the New York State Education Department. Additionally, he founded the Far Rockaway Jewish Alliance in 2001 and the TOVA Mentoring Program in 1997, served as vice president of CAHAL from 1993 to 2023, and chaired the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula from 1991 to 2023. In light of his undertakings, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula in 2018 and the Community Service Award from Knesseth Israel in 2001.
Mr. Altabe earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from New York University in 1981, a Master of Education in educational administration and supervision from Brooklyn College in 1987, completed the Summer Principal Program at Harvard University in 2003, and is a certified school district administrator from the New York State Education Department. He takes great pride in developing special education programming at his school, as well as an afterschool program. He attributes his success to his passion for education and his determination to provide the best support for the children in his care. In the coming years, he is considering a shift toward consulting, focusing on system-wide advisory services and developing instructional best practices for schools.
