Micheal Frederick Glisson, dean of instruction for health and human services at Lone Star College, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.
With nearly four and a half decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Glisson has built a successful career in academia. He currently serves as the dean of instruction for health and human services at Lone Star College-North Harris, a role he has held since 2018. Prior to this, he was the vice chancellor of strategic initiatives at South Louisiana Community College from 2015 to 2018, vice chancellor of academic affairs from 2012 to 2015, and dean of allied health and nursing at GateWay Community College from 2009 to 2012. He also worked as a consultant in health education with a higher education consulting firm from 2007 to 2010, held various positions at MassBay Community College, including department chairman, faculty member, and interim dean from 2003 to 2009, and was a staff radiologic technologist at St. Joseph Hospital from 2002 to 2004. Additionally, he was a senior lecturer in the Department of Radiography and Medical Imaging at Monash University from 1998 to 2001, a senior lecturer and head of the School of Medical Radiation Sciences at Charles Sturt University from 1983 to 1998, and a radiographer at Queen Victoria Medical Centre from 1980 to 1983.
In recognition of his impressive achievements, Mr. Glisson was honored with a National Teaching Award, which recognizes educators for their exceptional teaching effectiveness, innovative approaches, and significant impact on student learning and engagement, and a grant for university teaching excellence by the Committee on Advancement of University Teaching, which recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional teaching practices, contribute to pedagogical innovations, and advance the quality of university education. Laying a solid educational foundation for these successes, he earned a diploma of applied science in medical radiography from RMIT University, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1980. He went on to obtain a Master of Applied Science in research physics imaging from Monash University in 1994, completed specialist education for community college leadership through the Community College Leadership Academy in 2007, and holds PhD in research epidemiology and preventive medicine from Monash University, which he earned in 2007. Additionally, he is a certified and registered radiologic technologist with The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Reflecting on his career, Dr. Glisson takes pride in receiving a national teaching award and grant, which led to his recognition as a distinguished university teacher. He played a crucial role in national competency projects, establishing foundational competencies for the first time. At Monash University, he was instrumental in designing three laboratories and contributing to the clinical expansion of the program, including the creation of an innovative program based on her thesis on educational contracts. He attributes his success to the belief that it is not what happens to you that defines you, but what you do next. Looking ahead, he hopes to conclude his career as a college or community college president, seeing this as an extraordinary way to express his gratitude and make a lasting impact on the educational community.
