Robert Ellis, PhD

Title: Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Biosafety Director
Company: Colorado State University
Location: Fort Collins, Colorado, United States

Robert Ellis, PhD, emeritus professor and emeritus biosafety director at Colorado State University, has been recognized by Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in biosafety, veterinary microbiology and immunology.

Dr. Ellis’s stellar career reflects more than five decades of expertise and innovation in animal disease research, biosafety and scientific leadership. Since 2020, he has held the titles of emeritus professor and emeritus biosafety director at Colorado State University. In these capacities, Dr. Ellis continues to contribute to the university community by participating in monthly online meetings for the Healthy Aging Community newsletter, where he engages with colleagues to discuss topics related to COVID-19 and broader issues in immunology, microbiology and medicine.

Alongside these academic contributions, Dr. Ellis remains active as a consultant for several companies, providing guidance on biosafety protocols during clinical trials for advanced cancer therapies and other immunological treatments. Through these efforts, he applies his extensive knowledge to help ensure the safety of emerging medical interventions.

From 1978 to 2020, Dr. Ellis found success as a professor and biosafety director at Colorado State University. His tenure marked the transformation of the university’s biosafety program from its inception to one of the largest and most robust programs globally. Initially serving on the campus biosafety committee, Dr. Ellis became the institution’s first biosafety officer before advancing to director of biological safety.

Over the course of this significant tenure, Dr. Ellis was instrumental in developing safety protocols that supported a vast array of research projects. Under his leadership, the program expanded significantly in scope and influence. Dr. Ellis also pioneered the adoption of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology in veterinary diagnostics shortly after its publication in 1985, positioning his laboratory among the earliest adopters worldwide by mid-1986. This advancement greatly enhanced diagnostic capabilities for animal diseases.

During his notable time at Colorado State University, Dr. Ellis founded an independent week-long biosafety and biosecurity training course in Fort Collins in 2004. With support from his wife, Susie, in administration, this course trained more than 1,000 participants from around the world until it was integrated into ABSA International’s annual training offerings beginning in 2021. Dr. Ellis continues to direct this course annually and anticipates eventually passing on its leadership when appropriate.

Dr. Ellis’ impact extended beyond academia through his international work with USAID initiatives in Peru during the 1980s. In these efforts, he collaborated with local universities and indigenous communities in the Andes to address livestock health challenges under barter-based economies reliant on alpacas and sheep. Dr. Ellis’s approach emphasized adaptive management strategies when vaccines or cures were unavailable so that producers could sustain their operations.

Prior to joining Colorado State University, Dr. Ellis held a faculty role at South Dakota State University within the Department of Veterinary Science and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 1972 to 1977. In this position, he contributed to animal disease research and diagnostic services that laid the groundwork for his later innovations. From 1987 to 2014, Dr. Ellis further served as executive director of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD), guiding an international membership of up to 700 scientists through significant technological transitions including a complete move from paper-based systems to electronic platforms.

Dr. Ellis also held prominent roles within ABSA International, having been appointed as president from 2008 to 2009 following multiple years as a council member. His contributions with the ABSA were recognized with two of their highest honors: the Everett Hanel Jr. Presidential Award in 2015 for outstanding professional contributions and the Arnold G. Wedum Distinguished Achievement Award in 2020 for lifetime leadership and global consulting impact.

Dr. Ellis’s academic background provided a strong foundation for his achievements. He initially pursued an education at the University of Wyoming, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology in 1966. He continued his studies with a Master of Science at Purdue University in 1969. Dr. Ellis ultimately graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in veterinary microbiology and immunology from the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1972.

Dr. Ellis’ path into science was shaped by early ambitions to become a veterinarian practicing mixed animal medicine near his hometown of Lander, Wyoming—a goal redirected when he was not admitted to veterinary school despite ranking first among state applicants during his junior and senior undergraduate years. Determined to remain involved with animal health, he pursued doctoral studies directly after earning his bachelor’s degree so that he could contribute meaningfully through research rather than clinical practice.

Dr. Ellis attributes his success to a practical yet innovative approach that blends advancements in science with ethical conduct and continuous improvement, a philosophy rooted in family values and mentorship received throughout his education and career journey. He emphasizes leading by example while remaining available as a mentor himself so that others may benefit from shared knowledge and experience. A significant source of pride for Dr. Ellis is witnessing former graduate students advance within their own fields after receiving training under his guidance, which reflects both their personal commitment and professional excellence.

Civic engagement has also been important throughout Dr. Ellis’s life. He is a donor to several organizations including the University of Wyoming Alumni Association, Christ Academy in Nashville Tennessee, Rocky Mountain Raptor Program, Wyoming Wildlife Federation and local food banks. Dr. Ellis’s commitment to these honorable causes stemmed from his youth, as he grew up immersed in agricultural traditions that would later inform much of his professional focus on animal health.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Ellis plans to continue providing consulting services so that new therapies can be safely implemented into clinical practice. As such, he aims to help ensure that advances achieved over his decades-spanning career in academia will benefit future generations facing previously untreatable conditions.
