Mr. Torres is distinguished for his passion and dedication to music education as a choir director and musicologist at the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District in Harlingen, Texas, since 2008. His tenure with the district began as an assistant choir director at Harlingen High School, where he spent several years assisting the school choir and traveling to three middle school campuses weekly to help increase enrollment in the music program. Mr. Torres subsequently became the head director at Moises Vela Middle School, where he played a pivotal role in revitalizing its struggling music program, increasing enrollment from just over 40 students to more than 120. Moreover, he had the opportunity to assist with the music program at Cedar Elementary and teach music theory.
In preparation for his career, Mr. Torres received a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Brownsville in 2008 and a master’s degree in musicology and ethnomusicology from Texas State University in 2016. He is presently pursuing a doctorate from Liberty University. Aside from his formal education, Mr. Torres has remained abreast of industry trends as a member of the Texas Choral Directors Association, the Texas Guitar Directors Association and the American Musicological Society.
Mr. Torres’s success was recognized early on with a Student Conductor Award from the Texas Choral Directors Association in 2006. Throughout his tenure, the highlight of his career has been witnessing the profound impact he has had on his students, inspiring them not only to excel in the classroom but also to pursue music education after high school. Attributing his accomplishments to his late grandmother, who supported many of his endeavors, Mr. Torres remains enthusiastic about the future of his career. His goals include expanding the guitar program districtwide and enhancing guitar education throughout the state of Texas.
