With nearly three decades of experience to his credit, Mr. Durkin has built a successful career in academia. He currently serves as the managing director of technology at YES Prep Public Schools, a position he has held since 2021. YES Prep Public Schools is a tuition-free public charter school system in Houston, Texas, dedicated to providing students from underserved communities with access to quality education. Their mission is to prepare students for college success through rigorous academics, personalized support, and character development. His experience also includes serving as the director of enterprise infrastructure at Rice University from 2018 to 2021 and as the director of information technology at Freudenberg Oil & Gas and Freudenberg Flow Technologies from 2012 to 2018. He also worked as a network manager at IFCO Systems from 2011 to 2012, and as a senior voice engineer at Woodforest National Bank from 2008 to 2011.

Additionally, Mr. Durkin held roles as project and network manager at Associated Credit Union from 2006 to 2008, regional IT at CRC Evans from 2001 to 2006, technical lead at Convergys from 1999 to 2001, and director and co-owner of Compu-Surgeon from 1998 to 2000. He also dedicates his time as membership chair for the Society of Information Management, serves as a board member for Families Helping Families, a position he has held since 2023, and is a member of Aventa. In light of his impressive undertakings, he earned the Positive Influence Award from the Society for Information Management in 2023, which honors individuals who demonstrate leadership, inspire others, and have a positive impact through their professional or volunteer work in the field of information management. Laying a solid educational foundation for these successes, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in business management from Western Governors University in 2011, and a Master of Science in information technology management from Tulane University in 2020. He holds certifications as a Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute Inc., a certified network professional from Cisco Systems Inc., and a Cisco Certified Network Associate from Cisco Systems Inc.

Reflecting on his path, Mr. Durkin became involved in his career by applying his expertise in technology management to areas where it could make a meaningful impact. He takes great pride in expanding the programs and capabilities offered within the district, including initiatives for mental wellness, behavior intervention, and gap intervention. He attributes his success to his involvement in influential groups that motivate him to make a difference and positively impact others. He believes what sets him apart from others in the field is his unique ability to see both the art and the good in the science of technology. When advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes that integrity is non-negotiable, and the people in your circle will either inspire you or confine you. He draws inspiration from the quote, “Fear is a mile wide and an inch deep,” and believes that continuously shifting one’s perspective is essential for growth and success.
