Dr. Nigel Anthony Sellars, associate professor at Christopher Newport University and a Freelance Writer, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.

With three decades of experience, Dr. Sellars has built a distinguished career in higher education, specializing in American labor history and American popular culture. He excelled as an associate professor at Christopher Newport University, serving in this role from 2000 until his retirement in 2021. His experience also includes various positions at the University of Oklahoma: instructor in the Department of History from 1994 to 2021, adjunct professor in the Department of Journalism from 1990 to 2021, and graduate teaching assistant in the Department of History from 1988 to 1994Dr. Sellars has made significant contributions to writing, including “Why I Write” on Blogspot.com and “The Gonaymne Weapon” in 2015. He has reviewed works like Peter Cole’s “Wobblies on the Waterfront” and Greg Hall’s “Harvest Wobblies.” His other notable works include twelve short stories, the music album “Dougherty’s Fancy” in 1989, and serving as editor of the Yukon Review in 1988. He reported for the Daily Oklahoman and Moore Monitor from 1981 to 1988. He also authored “Treasonous Tenant Farmers and Seditious Sharecroppers” reviewed David R. Berman’s “Radicalism in the Mountain West,” and wrote “Cold, Hard Facts.” Additionally, he contributed to “The Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture” and authored “Samurai Wind: Ukishima,” along with various articles in professional journals.

Dr. Sellars also dedicated almost two decades as a faculty advisor for the Christopher Newport University Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta and has been actively involved with several professional organizations, including the Organization of American Historians, the Western History Association, the Oklahoma Historical Society, the American Historical Association, and the Small Press Writers and Artists Organization. In light of his impressive undertakings, he was honored with the Donnell M. Owings Award from the Department of History at the University of Oklahoma in 1990, the Marshall Gregory Award from the Oklahoma Education Association in both 1986 and 1988, the Carl Rogan Award from the Oklahoma Associated Press in 1987, and the Best Dissertation Prize. He laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Oklahoma in 1977, a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1980, a Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Oklahoma in 1985, and a PhD in history from the University of Oklahoma in 1994.

Dr. Sellars attributes his success to a combination of hard work and sheer luck. Over the past three years since his retirement, he has taken a break to explore other pursuits. During this time, he has focused on various interests and is considering a return to teaching, potentially as an adjunct professor at Christopher Newport University or local junior colleges, where he could teach survey courses. He is also exploring opportunities to further concentrate on his writing. Additionally, he is contemplating applying for a position on the Citizen’s Board at WHRO, a PBS station in Norfolk. In the coming years, he aims to work toward getting several of his books published, focusing on the constructive steps needed to achieve this goal.
