Mr. Horner is a seasoned educator with a career spanning over 26 years, marked by a dedication to innovation and a commitment to meeting the diverse needs of his students. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in 1998, he furthered his education with master’s degrees in differentiation and giftedness from Concordia University, as well as curriculum and instruction from North Central College. Mr. Horner’s career journey commenced in fifth-grade classrooms before a transformative transition into teaching gifted students, sparking his dedication to addressing their distinct needs. This ultimately led to the creation of Kid Innovation College in 2008. The innovative program was crafted to challenge and engage gifted students during the summer months.

Throughout his career, Mr. Horner has been recognized for his outstanding contributions, receiving nominations for the prestigious Golden Apple Award and winning the Teacher Innovator Award. He attributes his success to his unwavering work ethic and refusal to become stagnant, recognizing the prevalent issue of burnout within the profession. His most rewarding moments come from the enduring connections he has forged with his students, evidenced by the relationships he still cherishes with former students.

Beyond the classroom, Mr. Horner is actively involved in his community, founding a Youth Soccer Program to provide recreational opportunities for local children. Looking ahead, he envisions further expanding Kid Innovation College and inspiring fellow educators to embrace change and prioritize student engagement. He believes that the future of education lies in adaptability and innovation, urging aspiring educators to never underestimate the impact they can have on their students’ lives.
