Janet Lakomy, PhD, RN, an adjunct professor at the State College of Florida and the University of Mary, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of healthcare education.

Dr. Lakomy has earned distinction through her research on adult health, oncology and critical care. In addition to her work as an adjunct professor at both the State College of Florida and the University of Mary, where she teaches a research and design critique course, she has contributed her own research to various publications, including the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, the Internet Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice and Home Health Care Services Quarterly, among others. Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, she studied nursing at Del Mar College, from which she earned an associate degree, and Corpus Christi State University, where she attained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1979. Following this accomplishment, she went on to the Texas Women’s University, attaining a master’s degree in adult health in 1983, and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1988.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Lakomy is most proud to have played an instrumental role in directing the Denver Nursing Project in Human Caring, which aimed to establish consistent care for patients living with HIV or AIDS. In this capacity, she was responsible for creating a knowledge matrix that was later implemented into the program, as well as writing a grant through the National Institutes of Health that funded the project for three years. Other accomplishments to her credit include her winning of the Nightingale Award for Excellence in Education and Research, as bestowed by the University of Colorado, and her recognition as an Outstanding Teacher by the University of Texas at Tyler, for which she was a tenured professor. Though she plans to soon commence her retirement, Dr. Lakomy hopes to continue teaching graduate courses well into the future.
