Sheila Ards, Retired Professor at the University of Minnesota, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in inclusive education and public policy.
Dr. Ards began her career as a student at the University of Texas at Austin, where she was initially an accounting major. Her interests shifted, however, when she attended a summer program at Carnegie Mellon University. Obtaining a full scholarship with the school, she worked in the areas of how to help rebuild and revitalize poor communities as well as in child abuse and neglect. After she earned a PhD in 1990, she served as a teacher of policy at the Humphrey Institute as well as a vice president of community development in South Carolina. She later joined the University of Minnesota as a professor, where she remained until her retirement.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Ards has contributed to numerous professional journals and articles, and she is hoping to write a book. She has worked to help ensure that environments are inclusive of minority groups, and she has served on numerous boards and committees relating to public policy. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Ladies of Saint Peters Savior Catholic Church, and the American Political Science Association. She is the former president of the American Political Science Association and the National Economics Association, and the former vice president of the Association of Public Policy and Management. Dr. Ards has previously been involved with the NAACP as well as various child welfare groups. Dr. Ards is hopeful that her work throughout her career has helped to positively impact people and make their lives better.
