John Schechter, professor emeritus at the University of California Santa Cruz, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of music education.

Recognized for over six decades of service in his chosen field, Dr. Schechter served as a professor of music at the University of California Santa Cruz from 1985 until his retirement in 2009, whereupon he was granted emeritus status. Throughout this period, he taught first-year music theory for music majors, and established the Latin American Ensembles, which he directed and conducted 60 performances for from 1986 until 2000. The Ensembles performed largely traditional music of South America in both Spanish and Quechua. Previously, he had taught music history at Syracuse University, worked as an associate choral conductor for the New England Conservatory of Music, and served as a member of the Peace Corps in Colombia, beginning in 1968.

Dr. Schechter initially studied music at Hamilton College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. Following this accomplishment, he attended the Indiana University School of Music and graduated with a Master of Music in choral conducting in 1970. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of Texas at Austin, from which he received a Doctor of Philosophy in ethnomusicology in 1982. Well-regarded for his contributions to the field, he received the Charles Seeger Prize from the Society for Ethnomusicology in 1978, and participated in the Aston Magna Academy, a conference of musical scholars and artists held by the Aston Magna Foundation, in 1995. In accounting for his overall success, Dr. Schechter largely credits his skill, perseverance, and diligence as an educator.
