Johnna K. Yealy, PhD, Founding Director, Chair and Associate Professor with the University of Tampa’s Physician Assistant Medicine Program, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education and administration.
With nearly 30 years of professional experience to her credit, Dr. Yealy has excelled as the founding director, chair and associate professor of the University of Tampa’s Physician Assistant Medicine Program since 2016. In this role, she serves as the educational administrator for the physician assistant medicine program, handling duties including personnel management, admissions, student evaluation and assessment accreditation. Dr. Yealy teaches one class each semester while working clinically as a health care provider.
Alongside her primary role with the University of Tampa, Dr. Yealy is a consultant with Massey Consulting, a position she has held since 2022. From 2020 to 2022, she was a consultant for the Exam Master Corporation, working on the physician assistant college entrance examination. Dr. Yealy previously worked for the Oklahoma University Health Science Center from 2015 to 2016 as a clinical associate professor and the director for evaluation and assessment.
In preparation for her career, Dr. Yealy attended The University of Tennessee, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in psychology in 1994. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 1996 and a Master of Science in physician assistant studies from Bethel College in 2006. Dr. Yealy concluded her higher education at California Trident University International, graduating in 2017 with a Doctor of Philosophy in health science, global health education and research. Alongside her formal degrees, she holds numerous professional certifications, including physician’s assistant licenses in Florida and Tennessee.
Dr. Yealy has found additional success through her written work, authoring book chapters in the sixth and seventh editions of “Dermatology: Physician Assistant: A Guide to Clinical Practice.” She was a peer reviewer for The Journal of Allied Health Science and Practice, The Journal of Physician Assistant Education, The Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and The Journal of Community Medicine and Health Education, among others. To keep abreast of her field, Dr. Yealy has maintained affiliation with the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants. Since 2015, she has served as the president of the Tennessee Physician Assistant Academy.
In addition to her primary roles, Dr. Yealy has served with various branches of the U.S. Military, including the Tennessee Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Since 2020, she has served with the U.S. Army Reserve in the 7222nd Medical Support Unit. In recognition of her professional achievements, Dr. Yealy was named Joyce Keller Faculty/Staff Volunteer of the Year in 2021 by the University of Tampa PEACE Volunteer Center. She was named student of the year with the Tennessee Physician Assistant Academy in 2005 and received two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Reserve Components Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, an Army Service Ribbon, an Overseas Service Ribbon and an Armed Forces Reserve Medal, among other recognitions.
