Vivien Ann Schmidt, PhD, Professor of International Relations and Political Science at Boston University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Artists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in fine arts photography.

Having lived in Italy between the ages of eight and 16, Dr. Schmidt developed a natural interest in other cultures, and specialized in political science throughout the course of her academic studies. After completing her doctorate, she also developed a professional interest in photography, which had hitherto only been a hobby. Finally, Dr. Schmidt’s passion for writing coincided with her other interests to set her down a truly multifaceted professional journey in academia.

Dr. Schmidt began her career in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where she remained until 1998. During that time, she served as a professor and director of the European Studies Program, as well as the director of the Center for Peace, Democracy, and Development. In 1998, she joined Boston University, where she remains to this day as a professor of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. She was also the founding director of the Center for the Study of Europe from 2011 to 2016. Alongside her work in teaching, Dr. Schmidt has participated in photography exhibits, and was notably featured during a solo exhibition at the Italian Consulate in Boston, Massachusetts, at solo shows at Galleria Mentana in Florence, Italy, in 2010, 2012 and 2017 and at displays with the Center for European Studies at Harvard University between 2014 and 2015, to name only a few occasions.

Before embarking on her career, Dr. Schmidt earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science, cum laude, from Bryn Mawr College in 1971. She subsequently matriculated at the University of Chicago, from which she received a Master of Arts in political science in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1981.

In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Schmidt is most proud to have received a Guggenheim fellowship and decoration with the Chevalier French Legion of Honor. Likewise, she was bestowed with a European Union Studies Lifetime Achievement Award for her extensive political science work on Europe. Dr. Schmidt was also gratified that her 2006 book, “Democracy in Europe,” was recognized by the European Parliament as one of their top 100 books in 2015.

As a testament to her success, Dr. Schmidt has received a myriad of accolades, including, but not limited to, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Union Studies Association in 2019, a Distinguished Scholar Award from the University of Massachusetts in 1997 and a Decorated Chevalier from the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1994. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has also been listed in various editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in American Politics, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in America.
