Backed by a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Coulter attained a PhD in biological psychology from his alma mater in 1971. That same year, he proceeded to complete post-doctorate coursework in neurophysiology from the University of Texas’ Medal Branch, going on to further that education at the Universita di Pisa in Italy and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Early in Dr. Coulter’s career, he gained experience at the University of Texas’ Medical Branch and the National Science Foundation. In 1985, he began working at the University of Iowa as the head of the College of Medicine. In the years that followed, he took on a number of esteemed titles at the university, including that of coordinator and liaison of the American Indians and Alaskan Natives Opportunity program, associate provost for diversity, professor of community and behavioral health. In 2015, as a testament to his success, Dr. Coulter earned the title of professor emeritus.

Outside of his primary ventures, Dr. Coulter was a member of the Marine Biomedical Institute from 1975 until 1985. Moreover, he has shared his exceptional insights through contributing to various peer-reviewed publications in science. As an active member of his industry, Dr. Coulter maintains affiliation with a number of distinguished organizations. These include the American Indian and Alaskan Native Professors, the Native Research Network, and the Association of American Medical Colleges, among others.

Reflecting on his success, Dr. Coulter credits his ability to consistently stay motivated. He followed his interests and pursued a career in a field that captured his attention, not that of his friends or family, which proves to be his best decision every day that he gets up and goes to work. In 2019, the University of Iowa honored him with the Emeritus Faculty Lecture Honor, which accompanied the Distinguished Lecturer Award he received from the Iowa Native Nations of Health that same year. In the coming years, Dr. Coulter hopes to continue teaching in his field.
