Dr. Daniel Brooks, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and owner and photographer at Dan Brooks Photography, has been recognized by Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in evolutionary biology education and creative expression.

Throughout a stellar career spanning more than five decades, Dr. Brooks has established himself as an esteemed authority in the evolution of parasites, biodiversity, climate change, emerging diseases and theoretical biology. His expertise has been reflected in an impressive body of work that includes approximately a dozen books and around 400 scientific publications that have addressed critical scientific issues and advanced public understanding of topics ranging from evolutionary biology to the intersection of biodiversity and global health. Notably, Dr. Brooks’ most recent book, published in 2024, was nominated for the Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order.

Since 2011, Dr. Brooks has held the title of professor emeritus at the University of Toronto. In this capacity, he has continued to consult on integrating evolutionary biology into policy discussions concerning emerging diseases and climate change. He also conducts research fellowships and participates in think tank initiatives worldwide. Additionally, Dr. Brooks continues to serve as adjunct research professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, furthering his commitment to academic collaboration and mentorship.

In 2017, Dr. Brooks was appointed as a senior visiting fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), where he contributed to interdisciplinary research on pressing scientific challenges. From 2010 to 2011, he held a similar role as senior visiting fellow at Collegium Budapest, engaging with international scholars on complex issues related to science and society.

Dr. Brooks’s academic journey began with a faculty appointment as professor at the University of British Columbia from 1980 to 1988 before excelling with the University of Toronto as professor from 1988 to 2011. Earlier in his career, he completed postdoctoral research at both the United States National Zoo and the University of Notre Dame. These formative experiences provided him with a foundation in field research and scientific inquiry that would shape his subsequent achievements.

Beyond academia, Dr. Brooks has found success and personal satisfaction through Dan Brooks Photography. Initially using photography as a means to document field activities, he developed this skill into an art form that captures context and meaning beyond simple documentation. His visual approach has complemented his scientific work by conveying complex ideas through imagery.

Dr. Brooks’s professional journey has been marked by significant affiliations and honors. He is a fellow of both the Linnean Society of London and the Royal Society of Canada, both of which are prestigious organizations recognizing excellence in scientific research. He is also a member of the Cassandra Collective, a group dedicated to addressing urgent climate change issues through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Among his many projects, Dr. Brooks led a decade-long biodiversity and local community training initiative in the northwest Costa Rica Conservation Area. This effort combined academic research with community engagement as part of Costa Rica’s ecotourism development strategy. The project exemplified his dedication to integrating science with practical solutions for conservation and sustainable development.

A graduate of Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Brooks’ academic credentials are extensive and foundational to his success. He initially pursued an education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology and animal biology in 1973 and a Master of Science in zoology and animal biology in 1975. Dr. Brooks ultimately graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology and biological sciences from the University of Mississippi in 1978.

Dr. Brooks credits much of his success to early mentors who shaped his approach to both science and life. His high school track coach, Brooks Johnson, played an instrumental role by guiding him toward athletic achievement, Including earning a silver medal at the Junior Olympics and securing an athletic scholarship for university studies. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Mary Lou Pritchard became another pivotal mentor who recognized his potential beyond athletics and provided guidance throughout his undergraduate and graduate education. The lessons learned from these mentors—particularly regarding professional ethics and perseverance—have remained central throughout Dr. Brooks’s career.

A strong advocate for public service within science, Dr. Brooks has consistently sought to bridge academic research with societal benefit. He has spoken candidly about challenges faced by university faculty when engaging in public outreach, often needing to navigate institutional barriers that discourage such efforts or require them to be disguised as academic research activities. This experience influenced his decision to retire early from traditional academia so that he could devote himself fully to think tanks and policy-driven research addressing emerging diseases and climate change without institutional constraints.

Dr. Brooks’s commitment extends beyond his professional circles; he views education as a means not only to train future scientists but also to empower all students as informed citizens capable of discussing vital scientific issues within their communities. His teaching philosophy emphasized clarity, accessibility and relevance—qualities reflected in consistently positive evaluations from students over many years. Recognition for Dr. Brooks’s achievements includes honorary doctorates from Stockholm University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Brooks intends to focus on public service initiatives related to climate change and emerging diseases by leveraging his experience through ongoing collaborations with think tanks and international colleagues, including active involvement with groups like the Cassandra Collective dedicated to finding solutions for urgent global problems. Through sustained dedication across research, teaching and civic engagement, he exemplifies how scientific expertise can be harnessed for lasting societal impact, demonstrating that true accomplishment lies not in isolated milestones but in a lifelong commitment to advancing knowledge for the greater good.
