Robert J. Churchill, MD, Professor Emeritus of Radiology and Retired Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson Dean at the University of Missouri, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education.

Dr. Churchill, a distinguished figure in the field of radiology, has dedicated over 35 years to advancing medical education and practice. As a professor emeritus of radiology in the school of medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia since 2008, he continues to influence the academic community with his extensive knowledge and experience. Dr. Churchill’s tenure as the Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson dean from 2008 to 2012 was also marked by significant strides, particularly in diversity and inclusion, notably through establishing a senior associate dean for diversity and inclusion, a pioneering role at the medical school.

Before his emeritus status, Dr. Churchill served as a professor of radiology and physician at the University of Missouri Health Care between 1987 and 2012. His leadership extended to roles such as interim dean, interim vice chancellor and chief executive officer of the University of Missouri Health System from 1998 to 2000. As the vice dean from 1995 to 1998, Dr. Churchill played a crucial role in shaping the institution’s academic policies. His earlier career included significant contributions at Loyola University Medical Center, where he was director of magnetic resonance imaging and body computed tomography and an associate professor of radiology. Beyond his primary roles, Dr. Churchill has shared his knowledge globally as a visiting professor at numerous universities across North America, South America, Europe and Asia.

Dr. Churchill’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Loras College in 1968, followed by a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago in 1972. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Indiana University before pursuing a residency in diagnostic radiology at Foster G. McGaw Hospital, Loyola University Medical Center. Further honing his skills, Dr. Churchill undertook fellowships in ultrasound and body computed tomography at the Foster G. McGaw Hospital, Loyola University Medical Center, between 1976 and 1977 and in CT and MRI at GE Medical Systems (GE HealthCare) in 1984.

In addition to his education, Dr. Churchill’s professional affiliations include membership in prestigious organizations like the American Medical Association and the Radiological Society of North America. He has also served as the president and vice president of the Missouri Radiological Society and as a fellow of the American College of Radiology. Meanwhile, Dr. Churchill’s commitment to community service is evident through his involvement with various civic organizations. He has held leadership roles with the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia, the Voluntary Action Center, the Central Missouri Humane Society, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Missouri. His volunteer efforts extend to home visits with the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and service projects with the Rotary Club of Columbia.

Dr. Churchill’s scholarly work includes authoring and co-authoring 10 book chapters, monographs, and over 40 journal articles. He has also presented over a dozen times at national and international meetings.

Reflecting on his tenured career, Dr. Churchill’s expertise in whole-body CT scanning became widely recognized, earning him accolades within the medical community. Among other accomplishments, he founded the Missouri Radiology Imaging Center. He was also named Gwilym S. Lodwick Distinguished Professor of Radiology in the school of medicine at the University of Missouri. Dr. Churchill has also been recognized for his volunteer contributions, namely as the Board Member of the Year from the Boys and Girls Club of Columbia and with the Tom Botts Award for Outstanding Service to the Rotary Club of Columbia. In his retirement, he intends to remain active in his community through home visits for those in need.
