John Wesley “Wes” Humphries, retired music teacher at Jefferson County Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music education.

Mr. Humphries, a retired music teacher, taught for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, his entire teaching career before retiring in 2018. His tenure included teaching anywhere from six to eight classes per day, where students learned the fundamentals of music, including small and handheld instruments, singing and a regiment of music. Mr. Humphries’ most notable achievement was planning and coordinating various student music programs. He put considerable effort into making these programs a multicultural experience that was engaging and fun, featuring music from around the world.

In preparation for his career in this sector, Mr. Humphries received an undergraduate degree in music education from Gardner-Webb University and a master’s degree in church music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Beyond his degrees, he remained relevant in the music and education sectors as a member of the Kentucky Education Association and the Music Educators National Conference. He also recently became active in the retirement division of the National Education Association. As a church musician, Mr. Humphries has given back his time and expertise to his local parish.

Mr. Humphries’ expertise in elementary music, the piano and the keyboard have been pivotal to his success.  He also attributes his success to his upbringing, where his parents taught him the importance of work ethic. Mr. Humphries became actively involved in the music program at a church in South Carolina as a child. By the time he reached high school, he had taken piano and organ lessons, which inspired him to major in music. Reflecting on his accomplishments, Mr. Humphries advises the next generation of music educators to make learning fun for their students. He says this method is very effective because it fosters a positive learning environment and keeps students engaged.
