Edilberto Calayag Cruz, PhD, Retired Professor and Department at Osias Educational Foundation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education.
After over 40 years in the industry as an educator teaching at the high school and college levels, Dr. Cruz retired as a professor and program head at Osias Educational Foundation in the Philippines in 2023. Today, he remains active as a substitute teacher, where he can continue giving back and mentoring the next generation. Dr. Cruz’s long and successful academic tenure began as an English teacher at Trinity University of Asia in the Philippines in 1983, followed by numerous other appointments at institutions worldwide.
After his initial introduction to teaching at Trinity University, Dr. Cruz was hired by San Beda University as an English teacher from 1985 to 1990, La Consolacion College between 1989 and 1990, and Ateneo de Manila University from 1990 to 1994. He then joined North Hills Academy, where he remained for 10 years as a school administrator until 2003.
Returning to the classroom, Dr. Cruz became a professor of English at La Consolacion between 2003 and 2008. During that time, he also served as an exchange professor at Zhejiang Gongshang University in Zhejiang, China, in 2007. Dr. Cruz also excelled as an English language instructor at Al Jabal Al Gharbi University in Libya from 2008 to 2011, English as a foreign language teacher at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Oman between 2012 and 2021, and professorial lecturer and program head at La Consolacion University Philippines from 2021 to 2023.
Beyond these professional accomplishments, Dr. Cruz and his wife established a small elementary school in the Philippines that initially housed 100 students. Initially a modest classroom, it grew into a successful school that operated for 10 years. The school ultimately closed due to the loss of student enrollment when newer and larger institutions were constructed in the area.
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Cruz obtained a Bachelor of Science in education from the University of the City of Manila, followed by a Master of Science in literature from Ateneo de Manila University and a Doctor of Philosophy in English language and literature from Manuel L. Quezon University.
While in college, Dr. Cruz dreamed of becoming a broadcaster. However, he switched his major to education after realizing that teaching was his true passion. His desire to teach and share knowledge dates back to his years as a youth, when he was constantly inspired by his teachers to share his thoughts with the class.
Besides his primary work-related endeavors, Dr. Cruz has been affiliated with the British Council Oman, the International Literacy Association and the Center for Professional Advancement and Continuing Education (CPACE) Inc. Philippines. He also spoke publicly before CPACE Philippines.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Cruz contributed critical reviews of books and poetry. Subsequently, he began publishing works based on his research, much of which has been cited by scholars. Additionally, Dr. Cruz has engaged in creative writing, which has been published in various notable journals.
In light of his success, the University of Technology recognized Dr. Cruz as the Employee of the Year. In the coming years, he aims to secure a stable position in the U.S. while becoming more involved in publishing, where he can share his vast experience as a teacher with other educators both in the U.S. and abroad.
