Likewise, he has been the founding chairperson of the board for Ocean Champions since 2003, as well as president of the National Marine Educators Association and Essex County Ornithological Club. He is also involved with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area on the advisory councils. Between 1986 and 2012, he had served in varying capacities for the Cambridge School of Weston, Boston Harbor Islands NPS Partnership, Ocean Alliance, Ocean Conservancy and Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters. Looking toward the future, he intends to further engage citizens and families as eco-stewards to create clean and healthy environments and attain a better quality of life for humans and wildlife. Along with these accolades, a highlight of Dr. Moir’s career was initiating bioregional and ecosystem-based collaborative management by naming a portion of the Massachusetts Bay “Salem Sound,” Through this initiative, he was able to bring together five municipalities, an engaged constituency of citizen scientists and eco-savvy residents to improve environmental qualities of the region. He attributes his success to his organizational, listening and communication skills, management expertise and ability to learn from others and from his own experiences. Notably, Dr. Moir received a Bachelor of Arts in natural sciences from Hampshire College in 1977. Matriculating at Antioch University New England, he achieved a Master of Studies in science teaching and environmental management in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental studies in 2002.
