Richard “Dick” Larson, retired professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.
With 55 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Larson has excelled as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1969 to 2019, at which time he retired. Concurrent to this posting, he garnered a stellar reputation as a manager with the independent consulting firm Queues Enforth Development, Inc., now operating as 22nd Century Technologies, for 40 years. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a PhD in operations research in 1969.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Larson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He held the role of president of the Operations Research Society of America and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. He contributed as a donor to various charities. He found success with his written works “Model Thinking for Everyday Life,” “Urban Police Patrol Analysis,” and the “Urban Operations Research” textbook, which he co-authored.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Larson remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, the Operations Research Society of America, the Institute of Management Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Marquis Who’s Who Top Educator and was the recipient of the Lanchester Prize for Best Publication on Operations Research for “Urban Police Patrol Analysis.”
Dr. Larson considers his most exceptional career achievement to be working on the Hypercube Queueing Model, which stands out for its rigorous mathematical foundation. He devised the model and programmed it entirely in the C language. Furthermore, he debugged and optimized the algorithm to ensure its efficiency, devising an innovative compression technique to enable relatively quick processing. In the immediate future, he intends to secure the publication of his book at Barnes & Noble in the next three to five years. He aims to get back into writing and outreach to the public on the topic of model-based thinking.
