Coran M.H. Watanabe, PhD, Professor at Texas A&M University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements and leadership in Chemical Biology.
Dr. Watanabe has been a professor of chemical biology at Texas A&M University in College Station since 2002, where she has dedicated more than two decades to advancing the field and preparing future scientists. In her role, she teaches Chem640, a graduate-level course in chemical biology, and Chem258, a sophomore-level organic chemistry course. Each year, Dr. Watanabe mentors approximately 400 to 500 students, fostering their academic growth and encouraging them to develop confidence in their abilities.
Before her tenure at Texas A&M University, Dr. Watanabe completed postdoctoral work at the University of California, Berkeley, and The Scripps Research Institute, a San Diego, California-based nonprofit that conducts research and education in the biomedical sciences. During this period, she worked under the guidance of her former professor, who now serves as the president of The Scripps Research Institute. These experiences provided Dr. Watanabe with advanced training in biosynthesis and chemical biology, further preparing her for her academic career.
Dr. Watanabe’s academic journey began at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with high honors, in 1992. She then pursued doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in biosynthesis in 1998. Dr. Watanabe’s graduate research focused on biosynthetic pathways, laying the foundation for her future contributions to chemical biology. In addition to her academic credentials, she holds a level two CrossFit certification, which complements her passion for fitness.
Active civically, Dr. Watanabe is a strong supporter of the American Cancer Society, Inc. She is also heavily engaged with professional organizations, most notably serving as a counselor for the American Chemical Society. Dr. Watanabe’s contributions reflect her commitment to supporting the broader scientific community and advancing chemistry education.
As an expert in her field, Dr. Watanabe has contributed extensively to scientific literature, authoring numerous published papers. Her research has advanced understanding within chemical biology and inspired peers across disciplines.
Dr. Watanabe’s dedication to service is further reflected in numerous accolades, including a Research Innovation Award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement in 2003, a Dreyfus Lectureship Award in 2008, and a Lead Award from Texas A&M University in 2019. She also received a Research Scholar Grant from the American Cancer Society, Inc., in 2007.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. Watanabe considers her most significant achievement inspiring students to believe in themselves, emphasizing that self-assurance and perseverance are essential to success. She attributes much of her impact to instilling grit in her students and helping them understand that sustained effort leads to meaningful results.
Looking ahead, Dr. Watanabe aims to continue helping others recognize that success is rooted in self-belief and resilience. She emphasizes the importance of consistent incremental progress toward goals, whether in academia, fitness or nutrition, and seeks to make this philosophy central to her teaching practice. Additionally, Dr. Watanabe plans to expand her mentorship through opportunities with collaborators at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and further integrate her expertise as a level-two CrossFit coach into coaching others on fitness and nutrition.
