Roberto Gonzales, PhD, CPA, assistant professor at the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, part of Fairfield University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in accounting education.

Though he has built up an esteemed reputation as an educator across the last 10 years, Dr. Gonzales did not plan for this career choice. As a first-generation high school graduate, he initially didn’t even intend to pursue college, opting instead to join the U.S. Air Force in 2008. During his four years contributing as a facility manager for the Air Force, Dr. Gonzales completed coursework in air transportation logistics at the Community College of the Air Force. Through this experience, he realized that he actually had the ability to excel in academics when he focused his efforts.

As he began to study accounting more seriously, Dr. Gonzales began gaining experience as an intern at BDO USA and as a senior supplemental instructor at the University of North Texas. From his first opportunity teaching, he fell in love with it and decided it was the professional course he wanted to commit himself to. From 2017 to 2018, Dr. Gonzales rejoined BDO as a staff accountant and then an experienced associate, demonstrating his ability to apply his accounting knowledge in real-world scenarios. In 2018, he continued his growth as an educator, taking on the role of adjunct instructor at Tarrant County College.

For several years while finishing his PhD program, Dr. Gonzales held the position of certified public accountant (CPA) content developer for UWorld, a company that creates exam preparation materials for students. Since 2025, he has served as an assistant professor at Fairfield University’s Charles F. Dolan School of Business. Focused on teaching auditing, Dr. Gonzales prides himself on utilizing creativity and nontraditional learning experiences in the classroom. For example, in one assignment, he had students create TikTok videos where they had to explain complex accounting concepts in everyday language.

Having already accomplished many noteworthy achievements in his young career, Dr. Gonzales points to helping students as his most impactful and important work. He believes in the power of mentorship to change lives, expressing his gratitude toward his own mentors, including the department chair of his PhD program and Dr. Jose Lineros at the University of North Texas. Dr. Gonzales works hard to meet students where they are with a focus on empathy and acknowledging each student’s unique story. As someone from a blue-collar background who faced his own struggles with imposter syndrome, he finds fulfillment in guiding students in overcoming their anxieties and finding success.

Dr. Gonzales has sought a strong academic foundation for his vocational path, beginning with coursework in history at the University of Maryland Global Campus. He obtained a Master of Science in accounting and assurance from the University of North Texas in 2017. Subsequently, Dr. Gonzales earned a PhD from The University of Texas at Arlington in 2025. He has also been certified as a public accountant.

In addition to his professional life as a teacher, Dr. Gonzales enjoys playing the guitar and writing. Looking ahead, he is eager to settle into his role at the Charles F. Dolan School of Business, with the long-term goal of achieving tenure and becoming more heavily involved in the recruitment and hiring process. Dr. Gonzales aims to continue embracing a vibrant teaching style that prioritizes students, setting them up for future success as CPAs.
