Mr. Westberry’s distinguished career in music education and administration spanned over three decades, marked by his dedication to nurturing young talent and his commitment to excellence. His tenure at North Harford Middle School (NHMS) in Pylesville, Maryland, as part of Harford County Public Schools, from 1974 to 2008, was a testament to his expertise as a music teacher, choral director and administrative designee. Under Mr. Westberry’s leadership, the school’s choruses achieved remarkable success, earning over 10 excellent ratings and more than 35 superior ratings at various festivals, as well as the prestigious Judge’s Choice Award.
NHMS, home of the Hawks, caters to over 1,100 students annually in grades six through eight. It is one of nine middle schools within the Hartford County Public School District.
Before his distinguished tenure at NHMS, Mr. Westberry honed his teaching skills at Silver Bluff Elementary School in Miami, Florida, from 1970 to 1974. The elementary school is part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, which comprises 350 elementary schools throughout the county.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Westberry’s contributions extended to serving as an evaluator and adjudicator for chorale, solo and ensemble festivals, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the standards of musical performance.
Mr. Westberry’s academic journey laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He earned a Bachelor of Science in music education from Florida International University in Miami and a Master of Education in educational management and supervision from Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1987. This advanced degree equipped him with the skills necessary for effective academic leadership. Mr. Westberry’s credentials were further bolstered by a teacher education certification and a principal certification from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Active in his professional community, Mr. Westberry’s membership in esteemed organizations, such as the National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association, underscores his commitment to advancing the field of music education. In addition to his professional endeavors, Mr. Westberry has been actively involved in civic activities. As a former member of the New Directions Vocal Group at Riverside Baptist Church, he contributed to community enrichment through music.
Throughout his career, Mr. Westberry has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of education. He is a four-time recipient of the Who’s Who Among American Teachers award and has received three Harford County Curriculum Development Awards. These accolades reflect Mr. Westberry’s dedication to curriculum innovation and excellence in teaching.
Mr. Westberry attributes much of his success to overcoming challenges during his upbringing with the support of his extended family, who provided guidance during difficult times. His wife, Janice, has also been a steadfast source of encouragement throughout their marriage.
