Ms. Henson has established herself as a distinguished figure in music education, currently serving as chair of the elementary division for the Georgia Music Educators Association. In this role, she has been instrumental in organizing statewide conferences, inviting nationally recognized musicians to support and guide educators across Georgia. Ms. Henson’s tenure in her role has been marked by her dedication to fostering student agency and artistic development, a testament to her expertise in curriculum and instruction. Her involvement with the association, which is part of the National Association for Music Education, underscores her commitment to promoting music education on a broader scale.
Having begun her career as a music specialist with Atlanta Public Schools in 2006, Ms. Henson continues to make an impact within the district to this day. Her passion for guiding students and supporting their artistic voices has been a driving force throughout her teaching career, which has spanned over 15 years. Ms. Henson also takes pride in witnessing her students seize opportunities to audition and engage in activities she has championed, particularly during challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, she wrote “Stronger Together,” a song aimed at uniting students and staff during virtual learning, which is available on iTunes and YouTube.
Earlier in her professional journey, Ms. Henson was an accomplished performer with the Atlanta Opera from 2005 to 2015. Her debut opera performance in 2005 led to an invitation from the European Opera House for a tour that spanned several countries, including France, Luxembourg and Spain. This experience not only enriched her musical repertoire but also broadened Ms. Henson’s cultural horizons.
Ms. Henson’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996, followed by a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia, in 2001. She furthered her education with a Master of Arts in teaching with advanced music education certification from Piedmont University in Athens, Georgia, in 2012. Ms. Henson’s commitment to educational excellence was also evident through her coursework toward an Educational Specialist Degree in curriculum and instruction at Piedmont University from 2013 to 2014 and her completion of Tier I certification at Georgia State University in Atlanta in 2025.
Beyond her formal education, Ms. Henson’s professional development has included several professional credentials, including the completion of a Leading in Crisis course from LinkedIn in 2020 and the instructional leadership development program from Atlanta Public Schools in 2021. These additional studies have equipped Ms. Henson with the skills necessary to navigate complex educational landscapes and lead effectively during challenging times.
Beyond her professional achievements, Ms. Henson is actively involved in civic organizations, including the Out of Hand Theater Company and the Georgia Alliance of Black School Educators. Her philanthropic efforts extend to supporting organizations dedicated to addressing homelessness and gender inequality.
Ms. Henson envisions herself continuing to work within the school system or potentially opening her own school, while remaining deeply connected to the arts community across the southeastern U.S. Her unwavering drive and passion for education are rooted in the influence of her parents, both educators with over five decades of experience.
