Dr. Kim’s career in education is marked by a series of significant achievements and contributions to the field. As the founder of KIES Consulting, an educational consulting firm based in New York City, she has dedicated her expertise to assisting school principals with various operational aspects, including budget reviews, curriculum evaluations, teacher assessments and overall school management. Dr. Kim’s role as an educational consultant is driven by a commitment to helping educators and schools achieve their annual objectives and ensuring smooth operations.
Beyond her work in consulting, Dr. Kim has served as the head of science instructor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, since 2020. Her role at Johns Hopkins involves developing programs for gifted students, further showcasing her commitment to nurturing young scientific minds. That same year, Dr. Kim joined the United Nations (UN) International School in New York City as a science teacher, teaching students of UN staff and other international families. She previously served as a varsity golf coach on campus.
Leveraging her years of success, Dr. Kim’s professional journey began in South Korea, where she taught science at the Busan Board of Education from 2007 to 2011. Her relocation to the U.S. was a pivotal moment in her career, following her selection as one of nine STEM educators to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Education. This opportunity allowed Dr. Kim to contribute as a chemistry specialist and laid the foundation for her subsequent roles in American education.
In 2012, Dr. Kim became a STEM educator at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she developed professional development programs for teachers across New Jersey. Her work during this period notably earned her a nomination for the New Jersey Governor’s Award in the academic category. Although she did not receive the award due to her citizenship status at the time, Dr. Kim’s contributions were recognized by the director of STEM.
Dr. Kim’s career continued to flourish as she took on roles such as science curriculum developer and chemistry teacher for the New York City Department of Education from 2013 to 2015. She also served as a science department chair at Mott Hall Charter School in the Bronx, New York, and as an Urban Advantage Master Fellow at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City between 2015 and 2020. Before her most recent work at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Kim was active in higher education as an educator and curriculum developer at Columbia University in New York City from 2018 to 2020.
Dr. Kim’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in education and a Bachelor of Science in science education with a focus on chemistry teaching from Pusan National University in South Korea. She also holds a master’s degree in secondary science education from the Teacher Leadership Quality Partnership Program at City College of New York. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in science education. Dr. Kim’s academic achievements have been instrumental in shaping her career and enabling her to make significant contributions to science education reform.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Kim is actively involved in civic associations and creative projects. She supports a farm for retired racehorses in Saratoga, New York, reflecting her lifelong appreciation for equestrian activities developed during her upbringing in South Korea. Additionally, she has served as a judge for the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kim envisions expanding her impact beyond New York City by becoming more involved at the district, state and federal levels in educational initiatives and policy development. She aims to support other women in academia by helping them transition into educational consulting, fostering female entrepreneurship within academia, and empowering them to leverage their expertise beyond the classroom.
