Dr. Johnston, a tenured professor who taught higher education for 45 years, spent most of his teaching career at Georgia State University, where he taught as a Center for Business & Industrial Marketing (CBIM) roundtable professor of marketing and was the director of the CBIM from 1991 to 2024. His career also included earlier appointments teaching at the University of Southern California from 1986 to 1991 and The Ohio State University between 1978 and 1986. More recently, Dr. Johnston became a sales enablement consultant at Ascension Strategy and Growth, a management consulting firm based in Atlanta, in 2018.
Throughout his career, Dr. Johnston was a visiting professor at numerous institutions across over 30 different countries, including Korea University, the University of Western Sydney, and Ljubljana University. As a seasoned researcher, he has contributed over 200 articles in professional journals on the topic of sales and sales management, has been the editor for the Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing for over 30 years, and has authored and edited 10 books, including “Managing Salespeople: A Relationship Approach” and “Professional Selling: Types, Approaches and Management.”
Possessing a rich educational background, Dr. Johnston received a Bachelor of Arts in economics at the University of Pittsburgh in 1967 and a Master of Arts in counseling psychology at Ball State University in 1972. Returning to the University of Pittsburgh, he garnered a Master of Business Administration in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in business administration in 1979. Following his bachelor’s degree, Dr. Johnston enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving his country between 1968 and 1994 and earning the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring. He remains active in his professional community as a member of the American Marketing Association, the Association of Consumer Research, and the Academy of International Business. His success has been recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the African Business Development Association and the American Marketing Association, and he received an Honorary Doctor from the University of Finland.
