Ms. Westphal is distinguished for her expertise as a musician and middle school music teacher. Joining Williston Middle School Central Campus in Williston, North Dakota, in 2019, she serves as the school’s orchestra teacher, teaching grades six through eight and providing various differentiating lessons to meet students’ needs. In addition to teaching, Ms. Westphal spends time completing administrative tasks, selecting music for her students and booking the school auditorium, among other tasks. Since being hired, she has grown the orchestra program to approximately 120 students and now teaches a full course load on campus.
In preparation for her career in this sector, Ms. Westphal studied at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, receiving a Bachelor of Music in music education in 2019. Encouraged by her high school and college orchestra teachers to pursue music education, she built a successful program from the ground up while pursuing her degree, which helped her realize her dreams and inspired her to continue working toward her degree.
Apart from teaching, Ms. Westphal teaches private music lessons to interested individuals. She is also active in her professional community with the American String Teachers Association and serves as a Western representative for the North Dakota Music Education Board. Eager for a long and successful career in music and music education, Ms. Westphal aims to see significant growth in her strings program and hire another teacher to facilitate it. She also hopes to become more active in developing a community initiative, such as a youth orchestra. Ms. Westphal attributes her success thus far to her hard work, determination and the supportive individuals around her who have motivated her to continue excelling in her field.
