Dr. McCann, an esteemed leader in the health care sector, has been teaching as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, since 2020. As a dually trained and certified physician in internal medicine and pediatrics, he also serves as the medical director of the comprehensive care program, the Vanderbilt Interdisciplinary Care Program (VICP), ensuring consistent and high-quality care for patients with complex medical and social needs. As such, Dr. McCann manages complex cases of patients who become readmitted to the hospital due to their medical problems and social determinants of health while ensuring the highest standard of care for these patients. His expertise in hospital medicine and comprehensive care for the high-need, high-cost population at risk for recurrent hospitalizations have been instrumental in his success.
Outside his medical background, Dr. McCann has found success as the owner of Aimed Intentions LLC since 2022, a personal development company. He also co-owns Sylvan Ventures LLC, a short-term real estate property management company he launched alongside his wife in 2023.
In preparation for his medical career, Dr. McCann received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, cum laude, from Allegheny College in 2012 and a Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in 2016. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from Pennsylvania State Health, a fellowship through the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Quantic School of Business and Technology in 2022. Dr. McCann holds numerous professional designations, such as a license to practice medicine in Tennessee and Pennsylvania and board certification in general pediatrics and internal medicine from both from the American Board of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Active in his professional community, Dr. McCann is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is also a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine and Society of Hospital Medicine, among others.
As a seasoned researcher in comprehensive care, Dr. McCann has contributed his findings to several leading professional journals. He is a co-author of “Characterizing Hospitalization Trajectories in the High-Need, High-Cost Population Using Electronic Health Record Data” in Health Affairs Scholar, “Lymphopenia in the Adult Fontan Population: A Potential New Marker for Disease Assessment” in CJC Open, and “Hypoxemia without Respiratory Distress: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia in a Child” in the Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care, amongst other published scholarships. Furthermore, Dr. McCann hosts a YouTube channel, “Aimed Intentions.”
Dr. McCann has been recognized with the Scholarship in Education Award from the Woodward Center for Excellence in Health Sciences Education at Penn State Health in 2020 and the Quality Improvement and Scholarship Annual Award from Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Section of Hospital Medicine in 2023. He attributes much of his success to his resilient mindset developed during medical school when he overcame significant challenges related to a learning disability. The aforementioned experience sparked his interest in self-improvement and led him to pursue an MBA to enhance his skills further. Inspired by James Clear’s “Atomic Habits,” he aims to expand comprehensive care at Vanderbilt and beyond.
As he prepares for the future, Dr. McCann aims to obtain professorship status at Vanderbilt University while achieving additional milestones in his career pursuits He also intends to continue advancing comprehensive care as a distinct clinical discipline. Furthermore, Dr. McCann envisions acquiring the role of chief medical officer for a tertiary academic medical center as his ultimate goal, as this post will enable him to make a continued and meaningful impact on population health.
