Dr. McCann, a leader in the health care sector, has been teaching as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, since 2020. As a dually trained and certified physician in internal medicine and pediatrics, he also serves as the medical director of the Vanderbilt Interdisciplinary Care Program, where he focuses on high-need patients, and the Three Round Wing Unit. As such, Dr. McCann manages complex cases of patients who become readmitted to the hospital due to their medical problems and social determinants of health while ensuring the highest standard of care for these patients. His expertise in hospital medicine and comprehensive care for the high-need, high-cost population at risk for recurrent hospitalizations have been instrumental in his success.
Besides his medical background, Dr. McCann has succeeded as the co-owner of Aimed Intentions LLC with his wife since 2022, a personal development company. He also owns Sylvan Ventures LLC, a short-term real estate property management company he launched in 2023.
In preparation for his medical career, Dr. McCann received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, cum laude, from Allegheny College in 2012 and a Doctor of Medicine from Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in 2016. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a residency from Pennsylvania State Health, a fellowship through the American Academy of Pediatrics and a Master of Business Administration from the Quantic School of Business and Technology. Dr. McCann holds numerous professional designations, such as a license to practice medicine in Tennessee and Pennsylvania and board certification in pediatrics and internal medicine.
Active in his professional community, Dr. McCann was elected as a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians and the American Chemical Society, among others.
As a seasoned researcher in comprehensive care, Dr. McCann has contributed his findings to several leading professional journals, including the Journal of Pediatric Intensive Care, as well as numerous papers and presentations before professional groups. Furthermore, Dr. McCann hosts a YouTube channel, “Aimed Intentions.”
Dr. McCann has been recognized with a Scholarship in Education from the Woodward Center for Excellence in Health Sciences Education in 2020 and a Quality Improvement and Scholarship Annual Award from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s section of hospital medicine in 2023. He attributes his career accomplishments to his resilience. Having excelled as a medical director in his niche area of medicine, Dr. McCann notes that his program has given him a platform to innovate in an area of medicine that is not very well defined and only has a limited number of other institutions practicing and implementing the same level of care.
As Dr. McCann prepares for the future, he aims to acquire the status of associate professor and then full professor. He also intends to continue advancing in comprehensive care as a distinct discipline. Furthermore, Dr. McCann envisions obtaining the role of chief medical officer for a tertiary academic medical center, where he can continually impact population health.
