Anthony Bernard Johnson, Jr., music educator at KIPP DC Public Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in music and music education.
Mr. Johnson began his professional life as an elementary and middle school teacher with a focus on social studies. Following several years as an educator with Perry Street Preparatory Public Charter School, he was feeling burnt out on teaching but encountered a great opportunity to embrace his passion for music. In 2014, Mr. Johnson became the music, rhythm and sound teacher for KIPP DC Public Schools, while also taking on the role of a theater, music and drama coach for the school system. These positions have allowed him to fall back in love with education, reinvigorating a strong connection with his students and his desire to be a strong role model. Concurrently with his position as a teacher, Mr. Johnson has served as a minister of music at the Courts of Praise Christian Church since 2008. He also offers his insight as a wedding consultant at The Ministry For You LLC.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Johnson built a strong academic foundation for his future. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in human services, education and public policy with a concentration in community services and a minor in history from the University of Delaware in 2002. Subsequently, Mr. Johnson earned a master’s degree in Christian studies from Faith Christian University in 2008. He has further bolstered his credentials with a number of qualifications. Mr. Johnson is certified in pastoral counseling through the American Association of Christian Counselors and as a counselor through the Board of Christian Professional and Pastoral Counselors. He has also been honored as an elder through the National Association Council of Community Churches of America & Elsewhere Inc. and through Ark United Christian Community Churches International.
Outside of his career, Mr. Johnson is a devoted husband and father to two children. He enjoys attending live music concerts, cooking and playing cards. While he continues to feel fulfilled as an educator, Mr. Johnson plans to transition out of the classroom in the future. He hopes to find other opportunities in the educational field and has considered pursuing a career as a higher-education counselor or adviser. Whatever path he takes, Mr. Johnson remains committed to helping young people as much as possible.
