George Pierce, president at Crowpierce Technologies LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biotechnology education.

For nearly 50 years, Dr. Pierce has utilized his expertise in biology to develop groundbreaking technology and educate the next generation of scientists in how to do the same. His career began as an associate section manager for the Battelle Memorial Institute in 1978, where he remained for over a decade. Concurrently with his time at Battelle, Dr. Pierce took on the role of director for Celgene Corporation for several years. He followed that up by contributing as the manager of technology development and engineering at Cytec Industries and Georgia State University.

After almost 10 years in that management position, Dr. Pierce shifted to teaching. He served as a professor of microbiology at Georgia State University from 2000 to 2020. Throughout this tenure, Dr. Pierce established himself as a dedicated educator and mentor with a passion for genuine engagement with his students. While instilling his students with the fundamental knowledge necessary to succeed in microbiology, he also offered encouragement on finding purpose within their future careers and showing confidence. Shortly before his retirement from the academic field, Dr. Pierce co-founded Crowpierce Technologies LLC with a colleague. As president of this organization, he leads the company in researching and developing new biotechnology to address agricultural and medical concerns.

Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Pierce sought a strong foundation in his own education, beginning with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1969. Dr. Pierce stayed at that institution to earn a PhD in microbiology in 1976. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in microbiology at Rensselaer in 1977. While a student, Dr. Pierce joined the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, later becoming president of that organization.

As a commitment to his field, Dr. Pierce has been active with several industry-related organizations. In addition to his affiliation with the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, he has been an active member of the American Society for Microbiology and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. Dr. Pierce was a founding editor of the Journal of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, a scholarly publication that is still published today.

To commemorate his accomplishments, Dr. Pierce has been honored with a number of accolades, including the Quarter Award for Outstanding Achievement in Supporting Industrial Environmental Microbiology. The Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology celebrated his achievements by presenting him with the Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Pierce also received the National Award from the United States Football Foundation.

Dr. Pierce is also known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen. He served in the U.S. Army and has volunteered with Doctors Without Borders. Dr. Pierce remains active with his church, regularly taking part in charity activities. He has also donated to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and George State University.

Beyond his career, Dr. Pierce is a devoted husband and father who finds fulfillment in traveling. As he moves forward in his post-academic professional life, he is fully focused on the future of Crowpierce Technologies LLC. Through this venture, Dr. Pierce plans to lead testing on new medical treatments for leukemia, with aspirations of transferring that technology to a major pharmaceutical company. He also intends to continue research into cutting-edge agricultural methods for keeping fruits and vegetables fresh for longer.
