Dr. Sharon Van Sell, president at Van Sell Consultants and Mentors, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

After several decades of dedication to her vocations as a nurse and teacher, Dr. Van Sell has found additional fulfillment with her personal enterprise. As president of Van Sell Consultants and Mentors, she undertakes proprietary research projects on a global scale, often engaging with accomplished individuals who rank among the top five to 10 percent of their professions. Concurrently, Dr. Van Sell has served as vice president of research and development at AIM since 2019.

Originally intending to become a neurosurgeon, Dr. Krakow instead commenced her lengthy nursing career in the United States Army. Resuming the profession as a civilian, she became an adjunct faculty member of the Graduate Nursing Program at Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at the University of San Diego, assistant clinical professor at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and assistant director, patient care services and pediatric nursing at UC San Diego Health between the years of 1986 to 1990. From there, she moved on to a series of hospitals in Las Vegas between 1990 and 1996, taking on roles as a staff nurse and release charge nurse. Dr. Van Sell also served as associate professor for the Department of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, from 1990 to 1996, and her increased interest in faculty work led to stints as director of nursing at Pueblo Community College from 1996 to 1998 and as associate professor at Clinton University from 1998 to 2002. After moving to Texas Woman’s University in 2002, Dr. Van Sell served in an array of roles that included associate dean, primary nurse, and full professor until 2019.

Dr. Van Sell’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Murray State University, a Master of Education in health education from the University of Memphis, a Master of Science in nursing administration from the University of Colorado, and an EdD in guidance and counseling from the University of Denver. Her interest in academia has resulted in numerous published papers, as well as the 2010 book The Evolving Essence of the Science of Nursing: A Complexity Integration Nursing Theory, co-authored with Ioannis A. Kalofissudis. A founding editor of the Nursing journal, Dr. Van Sell has also served as a board member for the Family & Community Health journal and for the First International Computational Medicine Congress.

Dr. Van Sell’s lengthy list of accolades includes the Outstanding Five-Year Service Award from the City of Dallas Civil Service Commission in 2018, the Susan Cass Excellence in Teaching Award from Texas Woman’s University in 2009, the Outstanding Research Practice Award from the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing in 2006, and the Distinguished Woman of Southern Nevada Award in 1995. Additionally, she has been named a senior fellow by Advance HE, formerly the Higher Education Academy, and an international research scholar by the Turkish Science and Technology Institute. Dr. Van Sell was previously featured in the 51st and 53rd editions of Who’s Who in America, in the 20th and 22nd editions of Who’s Who of American Women, in the 5th edition of Who’s Who in American Nursing, and in the 26th edition of Who’s Who in the West.

Beyond her regular responsibilities as a health care professional and educator, Dr. Van Sell became the first nurse to work on supercomputers and earned certification as a Reiki level 2 practitioner. Devoted to giving back to humanity, she stresses the importance of maintaining a high degree of integrity. Additionally, she advises those who aspire to a career in nursing to root out their true passions within the field, while making sure to be respectful, stand tall, smile, and go forward with kindness and compassion and caring.
