Anna Toom, PhD, associate professor at Touro University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academia.

Dr. Toom has 50 years of experience in experimental psychology, and over the past 30 years, she has also excelled as an educator, first supervising students at San Antonio College in Texas from 1994 to 1998, then undergraduate and graduate students at Touro University since 1998. In Texas, her achievements in education were recognized with the Outstanding Teacher Award. In New York, her students have the same opinion.

Dr. Toom has a broad knowledge and applies an innovative, interdisciplinary approach. She is a pioneer of distance education at Touro University, where she created the first online psychological courses for undergraduate and graduate programs and then a virtual psychological practicum in which graduate students mastered psychological theories in dialogue with a computer system. She has also applied her interdisciplinary expertise to the analysis of literary fiction and art. The subject of her interest was the socio-psychological and ethical problems of human-animal hybridization, as well as the phenomenon of time travel, which she studied using examples of outstanding works of science fiction.

Dr. Toom’s contributions to science extend beyond the classroom and office. She actively participates in scientific conferences, presenting her research on the issues of students’ adaptation to a virtual educational environment and the diagnostics of successful learning in online courses. Her articles have been published in professional journals; she is the co-author of several monographs and the author of educational videos. Dr. Toom is also committed to community service; for many years, she has volunteered as a reviewer for the Journal of Education and currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Literature and Librarianship at the International Academic Forum (IAFOR).

Dr. Toom holds a PhD in industrial psychology, a master’s degree in social psychology, and a master’s degree in computer science—accomplishments that paved the way to her success. But she jokingly explains her success by having hyperactivity. Among Dr. Toom’s plans for the future is to write memoirs about the famous poets and actors of the past whom she was lucky enough to know. She sees this activity as her cultural-historical mission.
