Norman (Noam) A. Stillman, PhD, Schusterman/Josey Professor Emeritus of Judaic History at The University of Oklahoma and a founding member of the Israel Institute, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Judaic and Islamic history.

With over four decades of dedicated expertise in Judaic and Islamic history, Dr. Stillman stands as a preeminent scholar in his field, with a particular focus on the Jews of the Arab world. In 1995, he was honored with the prestigious title of Schusterman/Josey Professor of Judaic History at the University of Oklahoma, where his profound knowledge greatly enriched the academic community. Following his tenure in academia, Dr. Stillman assumed the role of executive editor for the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World at BRILL in Leiden in 2005, overseeing a monumental contribution to the study of Jewish and Islamic cultures.

Before assuming these distinguished roles, Dr. Stillman served as a professor of Near Eastern history, languages, and cultures at Binghamton University from 1993 to 1995. His academic journey also includes an extensive period at the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he held a professorship in History and Arabic from 1973 to 1995. Furthermore, his scholarly pursuits led him to prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Oriental in Paris, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. He was honored with the Distinguished Humanist Award by Ohio State University Melton Center in 2000 and received numerous academic accolades, including Phi Beta Kappa and the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Stillman’s contributions extend beyond academia into the realm of authorship and editorial work, where he has made significant strides in advancing scholarship. Notable among his works are “The Jews of Arab Lands” and “The Jews of Arab Lands in Modern Times,” seminal texts in the field. His dedication to scholarship was exemplified by his completion and publication of the second edition of “Arab Dress: A Short History – From the Dawn of Islam to Modern Times,” a work that has garnered international recognition.

Dr. Stillman’s academic journey commenced with a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Oriental Studies, magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He furthered his studies with post-doctoral work in Rabbinical Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1971.

Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Stillman has actively engaged with industry-related organizations, serving as an advisory board member and academic chair for the World Union of Jewish Studies and the Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa. His commitment to academic excellence and community engagement has earned him numerous accolades, including the Gary B. Cohen Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of Oklahoma in 2013.

Dr. Stillman’s dedication to scholarship is paralleled by his advocacy against the politicization of academia. He staunchly believes in prioritizing explanation and enlightenment over commercial interests, a stance evident in his renowned lecture series at the University of Chicago and guest professorships at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. His efforts continue to shape the academic landscape, leaving an indelible mark on students, colleagues, and scholars worldwide.
