Scott A. Hundahl, retired professor at the University of California, Davis and retired chief of surgery at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA Northern California Health Care System), has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education, surgery and oncology.

With 31 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Hundahl excelled from 2002 to 2019 as a professor of clinical surgery at the University of California, Davis and chief of surgery at the Department of Veteran Affairs, part of the VA Northern California Health Care System. He has retired from both positions. He began his career at Queen’s Medical Center of Honolulu, Hawaii, as associate chief of surgery from 1993 to 1995 and chief of surgery from 1994 to 2000. Concurrently, he served as chair of the Commission on Cancer in Chicago, Illinois, from 1998 to 2000 and found success in his own private surgical oncology practice from 1988 to 2002. He garnered a stellar reputation as co-founder and lifetime director of Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii, now CareResource Hawaii, since 1986.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hundahl pursued an education at Harvard University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, in 1977. He continued his academic efforts at Yale School of Medicine, graduating with a Medical Doctorate, cum laude, in 1981. He completed a general surgical residency at the University of Hawaii in 1986 and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1988. He holds certifications from the American Board of Surgery, Inc. and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Hundahl has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He held executive and leadership positions at the American Cancer Society, Inc. and the Ad Hoc National Task Force on Privacy of Medical Records. He worked as a medical editor for the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008, and as an author wrote over 60 journal articles and over 70 book chapters.

In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Hundahl remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a high-ranking member of numerous organizations including the Pan-Pacific Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Head and Neck Society, the Pacific Coast Surgical Association, the International Gastric Cancer Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Sacramento Surgical Society, Comprehensive Home Services Hawaii (now CareResource Hawaii), the Queen’s Cancer Institute, the Cancer Research Center Hawaii, the Commission on Cancer, the National Cancer Database, the International Cancer Data Base Committee, the National Cancer Data Committee, the Pacific Club, the St. Botolph Club, and the Nantucket Yacht Club.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Dr. Hundahl has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in the World and Marquis Who’s Who Top Doctors and was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He has received 11 awards throughout his distinguished career from such prestigious organizations as the Travis Air Force Base, the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, the International Gastric Cancer Association, the American College of Surgeons, the World Health Organization, the Commission on Cancer, the Yale School of Medicine, the Consumers’ Research Council of America, and the American College of Surgeons. He has contributed to several cutting-edge surgical and oncological developments, participated in the ongoing development of the National Cancer Database, and co-founded the largest nonprofit home healthcare agency in Hawaii.
