Dr. Hill has dedicated her career to fostering educational success and personal growth among students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. As a counselor and professor at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, since 2012, she has been instrumental in helping students strategize their educational plans and navigate personal challenges. Dr. Hill’s commitment extends beyond the classroom as she actively participates in committees that assess course offerings and ensure students have access to necessary classes. Her efforts have significantly contributed to creating a supportive campus environment that meets the diverse needs of its student body.
Initially hired by Cerritos College in 2005, Dr. Hill’s earlier tenure as an adjunct counselor laid the groundwork for her current position, allowing her to develop a deep understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation African American students. Before being acquired by Cerritos College, she enjoyed a distinguished tenure at California State University (CSU), beginning as the director of the student center for professional development at CSU, Long Beach, from 2008 to 2010, and then as the coordinator of student success and retention initiatives at the college of business administration between 2010 and 2012. Additionally, Dr. Hill shared her expertise with future leaders as an adjunct lecturer at CSU, Fullerton, from 2013 to 2014.
Dr. Hill’s career also included the role of associate dean of students at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina, between 1999 and 2003, where she was instrumental in implementing programs that supported professional development and student engagement, reflecting her dedication to enhancing educational experiences for all students.
Underpinning Dr. Hill’s professional success is her education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communication, earned in 1988, and a Master of Education in student personnel services, earned in 1990, from the University of South Carolina. She also received a Doctor of Education in educational administration and leadership from the University of California, Irvine, in 2009, and a Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary in 2023.
Dr. Hill is an active member of several professional organizations, including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the American College Personnel Association, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, and NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising. These affiliations reflect her commitment to staying informed about best practices in student services and development. Civically, Dr. Hill has volunteered for feeding programs and social justice initiatives, and is active in her church, further underscoring her dedication to community service.
In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Hill has received several accolades, including the Staff Person of the Year award in 1992, the Woman of the Year Diversity Award in 2000, and the Cultural Ambassador Award from Cerritos College in 2021. She attributes much of her professional success to the tenacity exemplified by her parents, which has inspired her commitment to education and student advocacy.
Looking ahead, Dr. Hill envisions transitioning into church work where she can provide support and developmental services for young adults navigating adulthood. She also aims to empower women by offering opportunities for professional development.
