Title: Middle School Educator
Company: Northern Cass School District 97
Location: Page, North Dakota, United States

Sue L. McPherson, a middle school educator at Northern Cass School District 97, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of secondary education.

Driven by a passion for learning and an enthusiasm for bringing the community into her classroom, Ms. McPherson has distinguished herself through her work on behalf of Northern Cass School District 97, a public school district based in Hunter, North Dakota. Leveraging nearly three decades of experience in her role, she primarily teaches English language arts and social studies to sixth-grade students. Deeply appreciative of the opportunity to teach others and work alongside extraordinarily talented colleagues, Ms. McPherson was, most notably, acclaimed as the Northern Cass Teacher of the Year in 2018.

In her present role, Ms. McPherson works diligently to help students form a connection with the local community. To facilitate this, as well as her efforts in teaching voluntary cursive, she facilitated a pen pal program, through which students could write letters to senior citizens for several weeks and ultimately meet them at the conclusion of their lessons. Additionally, she encouraged her students to participate in the “Amazing Shake” competition, through which community members could shake hands with each child and hold a three-minute conversation. Though they were nervous at first, Ms. McPherson was gratified to observe how the experience instilled the kids with a new sense of confidence toward the end of the competition.

Ms. McPherson initially studied elementary education, with a minor in speech, at Minnesota State University Moorhead, from which she earned a bachelor’s degree. Following this accomplishment, she went on to attend North Dakota State University, where she received a master’s degree in education, with an emphasis on leadership, in 2017. She was also endorsed to teach kindergarten students via Mayville State University.

In accounting for her success, Ms. McPherson largely credits her upbringing, which imbued her with a sense of empathy and passion for education that persists to this day. Looking toward the future, she aspires to shine a light on the importance of personalized learning, and to serve as an example for those hoping to serve as mentors in their own right.
