Wendell S. Akers, PharmD, PhD, Executive Director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center and Associate Dean of Research at Lipscomb University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical education.

With more than 30 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Akers has excelled at Lipscomb University as a professor in the department of pharmaceutical sciences since 2013, the executive director of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Center since 2022 and the associate dean of research in the College of Pharmacy since 2022. In addition to these positions, he has been additionally active as an adjunct professor of pharmacology at Vanderbilt University since 2019 as well as a senior consultant and DMPK scientist for Inotiv since 2019 and Patel Kwan Consultancy LLC since 2021. He previously served as an adjunct associate professor of pharmacology at Vanderbilt University from 2011 to 2019, a senior consultant and DMPK scientist with Precera Bioscience from 2016 to 2019 and a senior consultant for Quantitative PK Solutions from 2016 to 2019. Moreover, he worked for the University of Kentucky as an associate professor of pharmacy practice and science from 1998 to 2007 and Lipscomb University as the chairman of the department of pharmaceutical sciences from 2007 to 2021 and an associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences from 2007 to 2013. Mr. Akers began his career at the University of Tennessee as a pharmacy practice resident from 1991 to 1992 and a cardiovascular research fellow from 1992 to 1994.

Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Akers pursued an education at Roane State Community College, where he completed undergraduate coursework. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in 1991. He concluded his studies at the University of Kentucky in 1998, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences. Mr. Akers was initially drawn to the field of engineering but eventually pivoted toward pharmacy after being encouraged by his uncle, who worked as a manager in a retail pharmacy.

Dr. Akers attributes his success to his mentors, perseverance, and self-drive. He has been presented with a number of accolades over the years, including the Cardiovascular Fellowship Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy in 1993, a Fellowship Award from the American Foundation of Pharmaceutical Education in 1993, a Research Award from the University of Tennessee in 1993, the Outcomes Pharmacy Fellowship Program Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine in 2003, and Faculty Teaching Awards from Lipscomb University in 2015, 2018 and 2022. The recipient of the K-30 Award from the University of Kentucky in 2006, the aforementioned university inducted him into the Rochie Honor Society in 2001. In the coming years, Dr. Akers hopes to cement the long-term success of his program at the College of Pharmacy at Lipscomb University while building new programs and supporting their research with grants.
