With many years of experience to his credit, Dr. Murthy has excelled as a professor of medicine and surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine since 2011. In addition to his accomplishments as an educator, he has found further success with his written works, having authored “Issues in Kidney Disease: Transplantation” in 2021. Dr. Murthy has been also affiliated with the American Society of Transplantation, the International Society of Nephrology, the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the Indian Society of Nephrology and the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation.

Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Murthy pursued an education at the Maulana Azad Medical College in Delhi University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1977. He continued his academic efforts with advanced training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in 1981 and 1985, the New England Medical Center Hospitals in 1998, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2000 and 2001. Completing his medical training through a residency and fellowship in India before beginning his career in India and Saudi Arabia, Dr. Murthy obtained his diplomas in internal medicine and nephrology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.

In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Murthy has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career, including a Gold Medal for Best Performance. In 2018, he was notably invited to deliver orations at the annual meeting of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation. Dr. Murthy attributes his success to the support and encouragement of his family and his wife of 37 years. 

Inspired by a neighbor who was a medical student during his formative years, Dr. Murthy was likewise motivated toward the field of nephrology by his first mentor, a renowned professor in New Delhi named Dr. P.D. Gulati. Among his many accomplishments, he is incredibly proud of establishing a kidney transplant program at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, his work as the medical director at the University of Texas Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, his endeavors as a teacher at the University of Texas and the Baylor College of Medicine, and publishing a book on kidney transplantation in 2021. In the coming years, Dr. Murthy hopes to continue cementing the Baylor University Medical Center as one of the best medical facilities in the country while eventually searching for a successor, slowing down and devoting his attention to teaching and research.
