Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Company: California State University
Location: Desoto, Texas, United States
Lynda J. McCoy, postdoctoral research fellow at California State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in academic writing.
With more than two decades years of experience in the education field to her credit, Ms. McCoy currently serves as an academic writing consultant and chief operating officer of Phillips International Consulting. She previously spent 14 years as an educator, much of which involved working with teachers in order to improve their mathematics content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and teaching. She believes that student achievement correlates more strongly with the combination of teacher mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge than the effects of low socioeconomic status and language. After retiring from her work in education, she confidently embarked on her writing consulting venture, as she had achieved much success writing professional papers as a graduate and doctorate student.
Ms. McCoy attributes her success to her passionate and self-driven nature. Thanks to her exposure to educational practices in other countries, she recognizes areas in which the United States is lagging, such as in the preparation of elementary mathematics teachers. Looking toward the future, Ms. McCoy hopes to continue contributing to her field and society through her consulting expertise for many years. In addition, she plans to diligently support the election of forward-thinking legislators who aim to revise the educational system and bring it in line with what other progressive countries have accomplished.
Ms. McCoy holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and a Master of Arts in Education, with a specialization in Mathematics Education, both from California State University. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, with honors, from the University of Phoenix. While completing her dissertation, one of Ms. McCoy’s advisers recommended her to universities in China, where she still works in the summer as a visiting scholar with doctoral and postdoctoral students on academic writing.
In addition to her current role with Phillips International Consulting, Ms. McCoy also serves as a postdoctoral research fellow at California State University and as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Mathematics Education. Previously, she was affiliated with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as a teacher, a secondary mathematics coach, a teacher growth and development observer, evaluator, and administrator. She was one of a select group of teachers and administrators chosen to revise the LAUSD Secondary Mathematics Instructional Guide to conform with the Common Core Standards. Her final role at LAUSD was as a divisional Secondary Mathematics Common Core Expert.
Ms. McCoy is a member of the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. She is a past member of the California State Network of Educators. Known for her contributions as a civic-minded citizen, she is a regular blood donor with the American Red Cross and a mentor with Top Teens of America.
