Sydney Wade Poland, MS, Retired Computer Science Educator at Rice University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in system design education.
Now retired after more than 50 years of professional excellence, Mr. Poland previously flourished in the Digital Signal Processing Laboratory at Rice University from 2005 to 2007. Prior to this appointment, he found success with Texas Instruments as a senior system software designer for technical training from 1995 to 1998 and as a systems designer for digital signal processing research and development from 1990 to 1995, as well as a senior consultant for BP Exploration from 1982 to 1990. In addition, he previously contributed to Texas Instruments as a systems designer in the Corporate Engineering Center from 1980 to 1982, a systems designer in the equipment group from 1977 to 1980, a systems designer in the calculator division from 1972 to 1977 and a systems programmer for geophysical services from 1960 to 1972. Mr. Poland commenced his career as a scientific programmer for the Temco Aircraft Company from 1955 to 1958 and Chance Vought Aircraft from 1958 to 1960.
Before embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Poland obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics at Louisiana Tech University in 1955. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in mathematics at Texas Christian University in 1962 and a Master of Science in computer science at Southern Methodist University in 1972. Holding nearly 30 patents for calculators, digital signal processors and other technologies in his field, he has been affiliated with the American Bonanza Society and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. As a testament to his exceptional professional efforts, Mr. Poland has been spotlighted in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry and Who’s Who in the World. He recently passed away in August 2021.
