Patricia Hayes, Retired Music Educator and Choral and Orchestral Director, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership as a director and music educator.
As a student, Ms. Hayes earned a Bachelor of Arts in music from the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in 1956. After her graduation, she started as the choral director of music at Clendenin High School, moving in 1957 to a position as director of music at Shelton Park Elementary School. In the following years, she worked as the director of music for Campostella Heights Elementary, Suburban Park Elementary School, and Bayview Elementary School. Ms. Hayes continued her higher education at Old Dominion University, earning a Master of Science in special education in 1970. She became a teacher of music and special education at Mount Zion Elementary School, and in 1972 she started as director of music for Meadowbrooke & Lakeview Elementary. In 1973, she transitioned to a role as the director of chorus and orchestra at Portsmouth City Schools, where she served for more than 20 years, until 1996.
In addition to her career in the public school system, Ms. Hayes served as a specialist of music in Portsmouth Diagnostic Center from 1993 until her retirement in 2005. Through her career, she was recognized with multiple awards, including the Outstanding Music Award from the Portsmouth City School Board in 1992 and several Proclamation Awards from the Fine Arts Commission. Ms. Hayes is a member of the Virginia Education Association, the American String Teachers Association, the West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, and the National Association for Music Education, among others. She has played the organ at various churches, weddings, and receptions, and has worked as an accompanist for The Singing Beaz since 2007. As a testament to her expertise, success, and experience as a musician and educator, Ms. Hayes has been included in the eighth edition of Who’s Who in American Education, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in America.
