Stephen F. Smith, Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in computer science education.

An accomplished expert in computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics and machine learning, Dr. Smith has excelled since 1982 as a professor of robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. He has additionally served as the director of the Intelligent Coordination and Logistics Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. From 2015 to 2022, he was the founder and chief scientist at Rapid Flow Technologies, and from 1980 to 1982, he worked with the University of Southern Maine’s department of computer science.

Dr. Smith has found success through his published works, co-authoring the conference paper “Incorporating Queueing Dynamics into Schedule-Driven Traffic Control” in 2021. He was the second author of the articles “Using Bi-Directional Information Exchange to Improve Decentralized Schedule-Driven Traffic Control” in 2021 and “Ant Colony Control for Autonomous Decentralized Shop Floor Routing” in 2001. Alongside his primary roles, Dr. Smith has supported various Pittsburgh-based charities that focus on equity initiatives and improving the quality of life for citizens.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Smith attended Westminster College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics in 1975. He continued his higher education at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with a Master of Science in computer science in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science in 1980. Since June 2022, Dr. Smith has served as the president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. In the coming years, he plans to continue working on intelligent urban infrastructure and mobility design.
