Ray Howard Pettit, PhD, professor emeritus of electrical engineering at California State University Northridge, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in engineering education.
With nearly seven decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Pettit is a proven leader in the field of education. Specializing in electrical and communications engineering, he operated as a professor of electrical engineering at California State University Northridge from 1978 to 2003. Additionally, in 1983, he took on the role of department chair at the institution. Having retired in 2003 from teaching full-time, Dr. Pettit maintains the distinguished title of professor emeritus at the university.
Prior to joining the staff at California State University, Dr. Pettit served as an associate professor/professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, his alma mater, from 1966 to 1978. He also worked extensively within the scientific community with several notable companies, such as the Lockheed Martin Corporation from 1963 to 1966 and the Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1954 to 1959. As part of his dedication to his professional endeavors and interests, Dr. Pettit also remains affiliated with several industry-related organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and The Tau Beta Pi Association Inc.
Prior to embarking on his vocational journey, Dr. Pettit cultivated his own formal education, initially earning a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 1954. He subsequently committed himself to honorably serving in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, achieving the rank of first lieutenant prior to retiring. Following his military service, he returned to Georgia Tech and received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1960. In his doctoral pursuits, Dr. Pettit would go on to earn a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Florida in 1964.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Pettit is also well-regarded for his creative output, having authored a memoir, “Mill-Village Boy,” in 2004, and later releasing an expanded version, “The Amazing Adventures of the Mill-Village Boy,” in 2022. He also published the reference book “ECM and EECM Techniques for Digital Communication Systems” in 1982, in addition to making numerous other scientific paper contributions. To commemorate his achievements, he was previously named Professor of the Year by the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he is most notably proud to have served as a tenured professor. In light of his fulfilling career, Dr. Pettit largely attributes his success to his dedicated work ethic, as well as the support and guidance of his parents, teachers and mentors.
