Ryan Samuel, PhD, Assistant Professor and Swine Specialist at South Dakota State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in swine nutrition.
In preparation for his career, Dr. Samuel attended the University of Prince Edward Island and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 2003. In 2008, he earned a Master of Science in animal science from the University of Alberta. He concluded his higher education at the same institution, graduating in 2010 with a Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Samuel immigrated to the United States in 2011.
Since 2017, Dr. Samuel has served as an assistant professor and swine specialist at South Dakota State University. In this position, he employs his expertise in swine nutrition, breeding and producing piglets and overseeing an offsite commercial farm. Dr. Samuel is responsible for overseeing TQA certification training. He additionally proposes research and works to secure grant funding.
Dr. Samuel attributes his success to working effectively with his team. He finds working collaboratively greatly beneficial to his professional success. During his upbringing, he worked on multiple farms with his family in Canada and was intrigued by the differences between the two facilities, leading him to pursue his career as a researcher on the subject.
Among his accomplishments, Dr. Samuel considers his most notable achievement to be his work on DDGS, or distillers’ dried grains with solubles. Through his research, he has been able to help producers feed corn DDGS without creating negative effects or loss of growth performance. In the coming years, Dr. Samuel plans to continue his current work and conduct more research on swine nutrition. He also hopes to find new graduate students to collaborate with him on projects.
