Bahgat W. Malek

Title: Dean
Company: Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center
Location: Pacific Grove, California, United States

Bahgat Malek, Dean at Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in language instruction.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and geology in 1965 from Assiut University in Egypt, Mr. Malek subsequently immigrated to the United States and graduated in biblical studies from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California in 1974. He then joined the Arabic Department of the Defense Language Institute (DLI) Foreign Language Center, a United States Department of Defense educational and research institution consisting of two separate entities which provide linguistic and cultural instruction to the Department of Defense, other federal agencies and numerous customers around the world. He became a United States citizen in 1979.

Mr. Malek provided superior education as an instructor from 1974 to 1985, a supervisor in Arabic Department C from 1985 to 1988, mentor and team leader in Arabic Department C from 1988 to 1991, and numerous administrative positions from 1991 to 2004, when he became a teacher and team leader with Arabic Department C, Middle East School II with the DLI. In addition, he has served as a certified federal mediator and a counselor for equal employment opportunity with the Justice Center of Atlanta from 1992 to the present.

Mr. Malek has authored numerous texts on language comprehension that include “AAIM Higher III–Arabic Authentic Listening Comprehension for Intermediate & Advanced Studies” in 2008;  “The Ten Measures of the Arabic Verb” in 2006; and “Arabic Grammar Charts” published from 1975 to 2003. His numerous honors include numerous Coin of Excellence awards from the DLI and Distinguished Instructor of the Year from the Kiwanis Club of the Monterey.

Attributing his success to his deep faith, Mr. Malek recalls that prior to becoming involved at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, he was a chemist working in Orange County. He initially accepted a semester of teaching as a trial for himself and for the institution. Moreover, that one semester turned out to be 35 years and continuing, as he still offers his assistance to the institution on a voluntary basis as a consultant.

As a career highlight, Mr. Malek cites pioneering a program known as ProMES, which stands for Professional Military Education System, at the DLI in 2006. It is an anti-terrorist language program which aimed to train 600 majors from all services as unit commanders in Afghanistan, Iraq and some other hotspot locations. He facilitated the training at the Air Force Academy, Naval Postgraduate School, Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, Maxwell Air Force Base and the Command and General Staff College.
